staffy keeps running from other dogs!

Hey everyone, new to the forum, was wondering if anybody experienced there dog running away from other dogs, he's 12 months old and was a nervous pup, has come along way but sometimes feels like he taking a step backwards, he's very friendly wit other dogs, loves playing chasing but more often than not he's getting chased, he seems to run away automatically and dogs chase him sometimes growling and snapping at him, is it a confidence issue ? Can I train him not to run away straight away ?

Hi and welcome from Me n Steffi I have no personal experience with running away, my girl is usually the chaser not the chasee But if he is scared have you tried socialising him with smaller or quieter dogs? Perhaps he could gain confidence from playing with other shy dogs..

I agree, try limiting his play to dogs that are gentle & totally non aggressive. That will help to build his confidence. Once he's totally comfortable with that, you can start introducing him quietly to more boisterous dogs, but keep him on a long training line (you can get quite cheap ones on ebay - about 50' long) so that you can stop him if he tries to run away. Make sure that other dog owners are aware that you're trying to get him over his nervousness and that if he gets a bit worried, you'd be grateful if they'd call their dog away.

P.S. Has he been neutered, and if so, when?

my pup lays down when a big dog approach... and a little dog always barks at her, even though she's humble...

maybe try with a quiet dog.. most of time are the biggest dogs quiet and the smallest very hyperactive..

Thanks for all the welcome's and replys!, ya because if we meet less confident dogs he is the chaser, even then his first reaction is to run, think it's more of a habit than anything else, he loves sheep dogs and border collie's, they never seem to bother him, just more boisterous and confident dogs, I will def try to build his confidence with dogs hes comfortable with! And no didn't get neutered.
