Re: How to buy a puppy
Sorry to any pedigree buyers but, that opened my eyes more, you may see the mother/father, health checks etc, but how much do you really know! My first was a ped, she had mange and all sorts, still cost £600! I was so nieve. Would love people to be more educated when buying a ped as sometimes there not what they are sold as. Really good, and I thought it was all about buying a cute pup!

Re: How to buy a puppy
If you're going to buy a pedigree dog of any breed you have to do a lot of homework first. You contact the breed club, you phone breeders, you go to shows & speak to as many people as possible, you join forums!

Most certainly, was fasinating but worrying to watch. How many people buy on instinct? I haven't a clue on peds, but know a lot about the breed. Worrying more that anything what people think they are buying? I'm sorry when there sold in shops is so wrong.
I think the best thing that was said was "If your buying from a breeder and they don't question you, walks, household, lifestyle etc" then worry.
I guess with proper breeders then thats foremost in there minds, as it should be.

Yes, a good breeder will bombard you with questions, and will probably want to meet you face to face before making any decisions about selling you their precious pup!

Re: How to buy a puppy
Ive heard about that before but couldnt watch the footage too upsetting im afraid.
When I bought my first dog she had just been born there were no questions asked for a depsit and over the weeks I phoned to make contact otherwise nothing and I picked her up at 6 weeks cause when I rang Nov 3rd they said she was in the shed with the others OMG went for her within the hour.
Second dog came from a freind she knew my girl and what a lovely nature she had. Rang me to say she had mated her bitch and I had to have one of the puppies. Was banned from visiting as everyone else due to infections ect she made contact with me every day told me which one would be best suited to us at 4 weeks old I met my boy we agreed a price and was told I could pay whenever and weekly if needed no rush. He was 8 weeks the christmas week but the breeders decided to keep them another week as christmas was such a busy time, he came with toys bedding from home and a life long freindship they visit him regular and have played a big part in his life.
If the time came that I would look to buy another it would be one thats bred with love and care

Re: How to buy a puppy
Its just a shame breeders like that aren't more commen.
I'm still going to go on rescueing as I think thats a bigger issue, but if all breeders where honest and true, then rescuing wouldn't be such a problem.
Its to easy to get your hands on Staffy pup. All been said before really and there's not a lot we can do to change that fact

Re: How to buy a puppy
Why do people have to have the most perfectly breed dog? What does it achieve, or is it just a hobby?

Re: How to buy a puppy
To a top breeder having the best is the most wonderful acheivement, to have bred the perfect dog would be the icing on the cake , it is a hobby I suppose but breeders are passionate to keep the characteristics according to how they should be

Re: How to buy a puppy
Its disgusting and its the buyers fault almost as much as the breeders you have to ask the question and you have to see everything not just awww and buy.
If their not with the parents/family environment/bad condition/litter mates unhealthy, then you should say no and inform the kennel club that way the breeder will get checked and he or she will have to improve. theres no point going in with your heart because you'll see a negleted pup and want to take it and give the owner money and wheres that money going, on another bitch because the one out back is to old.

Re: How to buy a puppy
I watch it too
Thought the puppy farm bit was quite interesting from my view as the puppy we had before Bruno called him Patch was advertised as a Border Collie, So we went and had a look , we asked to see the mother and the woman was a bit taken back , as if to say how dare you ask ! she said we have the auntie down there pointing to what look like a aviary for bird and in there was what looked like a border collie, now the alarm bells should have been ringing but when you see puppies your brain goes to mush. Anyway we brought him, when we got him home, he was sick and running no2, we thought oh this is just nerves. We booked him in the vets he had his first injection and we went home, his number 2 were not getting any better and for some reason i went and had a look at one and there were traces of blood, of course alarm bells were ringing, so we took him to the vet and he checked him over and said his large bowel is inflammed and gaves us medicine for him and stuff to help the no2 come more solid and we changed his food and £142.50 later , he was better. We also asked if he was pure border collie and the vet said no but wasn't sure what he was crossed with.
The weeks passed but in this weeks, my daughter got nip on the chest by him and it bled. but she was teasing him. But one late afternoon near christmas my daughter was sitting on the sofa watching tv and the dog was on there too, now the dog was awake, my daughter stroked him and the next thing the dog had gone for her face , he managed to rip the inside of her lip which took us 15 minutes to stop the bleeding and 2 and a half hours in a&e. Myself and my husband has a long discussion on what we should do with the dog, and we decided that we should get the vets advise as we didn't reallly want to get rid of him or have him put to sleep, so i rang the vet and told her the situation and with adults the dog is fine, he is fine with other dog never had problem there , it just seems to be children, he liked to keep them in line so to speak. The vet put me on to a woman in Clapham who rehomes dogs no matter what is wrong with them and as far as i know he's been rehomed with adults, but like the programme said these puppy farm puppies are not socialised with humans or anything, they are just in pens, this dog we had was in a barn with plenty of space to run around and it was clean too, but the puppies were fed on adult working dog food, the woman who rehomed said that he's got lurcher in him, and he probably comes from Ireland as most of them that come from Ireland come with tummy complaints. But like my mum used to say we live and learn .

That sounds exactly like the first dog I had! That was a border collie too, and from what I now know was a puppy farm. She was on her own in a cage. When we got her home she was ill, too, and the vet thought she had distemper. Luckily she pulled through and I learned so much from her - obedience training, seasons, even pyometra poor thing! And we loved her. But her temperament wasn't always the best, she could be very short temperd, and she wasn't keen on kids. Our vet said that she had probably been teased by the puppy farm's children before we bought her.

My first one came from Pound Hill (apt name!) which I think is Sussex (my geography is total crap!). The second came from Market Harborough, but was a full pedigree.
