Cat introductions.. Empty Cat introductions..

For those of you that have mixed your staffs with cats in the household.. how did you go about carrying out the initial introduction, and then eventually integrating them fully? Not sure whether to use a crate, or leads etc? Any advice would be great Smile

we don't have a cat but harv went to 'grandads' alot when he was younger who has 3 cats and we just did intros the same as you would with a pup. Kept on lead and allowed to meet calmly Smile he has never been interested in cats since and would happily live with one Smile

Didn't go well for me. Best to have a cat when the dog is a pup. If there is too much prey drive, you might never be able to make it work. We had to send our cat to another home for his own safety. We tried for months but we had actually hunting going on and never a safe or peaceful moment.

I think successful introduction also rely heavily on the cat. A cat that is either already used to dogs or very calm/confident will generally do much better. A confident cat won't run or dart around which will help the dog control his/her prey drive. Additionally a sociable cat whilst initially hesitant will be interested in meeting the dog so sniffing each other etc... Our cat gets on with all but one of our friends and families dogs and the only dog that is a problem is a JRT cross who is actually smaller than Wilf. A bad move for this little dog as Wilf thinks he is a Staff lol

We have 4 cats and 2 dogs. the cats were there first. Best way is to introduce them where the cat can get away or jump up somewhere safe. Never hold on to the cat or it will panic. We had Lily first and I just let her run in where the cats were, the cats could jump out the way if they wanted. If Lily went too near they hissed, spat or bitch slapped her so she learnt not to pester them. It does take a while to get them to tolerate each other. I did the same when I got Lola. Lola does chase them sometimes but in a playing way Big Grin
