How much to walk a puppy

I have a 5 month old puppy who loves to walk. I was taking him for a walk today and a man came up to me and asked how old the dog was. I told him the age and he said that I was walking him to far, that it is bad for his bones and joints. He then compared it to making an infant play tackle football lol. What would you guys say is a "safe" distance and or amount of time to walk him. Thanks for the help

it should be 5 mins lead walking for every month + off lead play which doesn't count as they can do this at their own pace and rest when they want

Yes the rule with puppies is 5 minutes per month of age onlead walking So at 5months you should be walking 25mins 2-3 times a day

He is more than willing to keep walking after that amount of time, is it okay to go a little further or this 5min per month rule is good to stick with?

stick with the 5 min per month (25 min per walk lead time) and then find somewhere on your walk to let him off lead or if his recall is not so good put him on a long training line to run about

Yeah as Dave said, play time does not count in the 5 min rule so so maybe walk 10-15mins then stop and have an offlead play Then walk the further 10-15mins

Best to stick with the rule. The put on weight faster than their neuromuscular structure can keep up with and can lead to health issues if they are overexercised.
