Help with my report on feminism.

Hi all,

I have a report on feminism to hand in later this week, and I am totally stuck! I was wondering if you guys can give me your opinions on the topic and if you feel as though woman are still being oppressed today.

Erm...just my views on it really. The problem is, I can't decide what my views are lol

Ah, I love femonism!! I'm an English degree undergrad and have covered it pretty well. Are you pro or anti feminist??

That's what I can't decide. I agree that women should have equal rights to men but believe that people often confuse equality with being 'the same'. Men and women are not the same. It's all very complex lol

You could dip into the gender theory side of things and say that masulinity and femininity are products of culture, and therefore not valid as criteria for whether or not a woman should have equal rights.

Personally, I am a bit of a feminist, and the fact that in some jobs, women get lower wages than men and little things like that, prove that women are still oppressed. But there is also an argument that women want it both ways, if you want to look at it from that view.

Well you don't have to decide. In your report you could put a good argument from both sides. You will be able to be objective about it. You say people confuse the various definitions of equality in terms of males and females, use that too. The better your argument the better your grade and being in the middle will serve you better due to the fact you'e not going to be biased.

Also you could touch on the fact that women get a lot of benefits from being women, maternity leave, better work hours that work around children etc, but it has only just been passed (i think) for men to be allowed as much time for maturnity leave as women.

well if you take the tennis players for instance. the women want to paid the same as the men but the womens games are less sets (or what ever they call them) so why should they be paid the same as the men who have to play more and longer. i am all for equal rights but if us women want to be paid the same and treated the same then we need to do the same exactly as the men. but women need to be able to prove that they are not the meek mild people we have been stereotyped as for centuries. it is our grandfathers and GGGGGGrandfathers that opressed women but it is our Grandmothers and GGGGGrandmothers that allowed this to happen.. the suffrogettes were great and did a lot for women but some women in every generation dont do us any favours because they like the stereotypical mild little woman thing it gives them an excuse to be lazey.

As you say, men & women are different & are meant to be. They have different roles in life.

However, if a woman does exactly the same work as a man, she should get paid the same. If a woman is physically & mentally capable of doing a 'man's' job then she should be allowed to do it.

Equality for a woman shouldn't be whether they are treated the same as a man, but whether they are given the same respect as a man, no matter what they are doing in life.

Feminists often, unfortunately, almost want to be men, and are looked down on by & large because of it.

You could use the white paper agreement that was passed in parliment and now all the equal pay claims that are being paid out to suppressed women all over the country when there male compareter was paid bonuses because they were prodominantly male workers????? at a cost of millions as we speak as a example maybe
