boy vs girl?
Hey, I used to be on here a while back - but want some advice. Im looking at getting another puppy, I have miley - 16 month old girl, and we think its time she had some company.
We dont know which is better to get a boy or girl? I used to live with some1 who had a boy staffie and she cant let him off the lead as aggressive and its put me off boy staffs since then. How likely is it that boys are aggressive by nature? We have brought miley up with lots of training, love and exercise and she is sooo friendly.
What are your opinions?

Re: boy vs girl?
if there trained right there is no reson a male staffy will be any more aggresive than a female.

Could you not take the dog to view your own and see how they get along ? x

Re: boy vs girl?
if you intend to breed your dog someday, by all means buy a female.the female is smaller than the male and generally quieter and she has less tendency to roam in search of romance, a proper trained male can be a charming pet and has a certain difference in temperament that is appealing to many people. male versus female is a matter of personal choice, both make fine companions

Well said ! I love my kuma she is still as hyper as a male but shes slowly getting more calm after her 1st proper season just finishing

Re: boy vs girl?
Personally i find it the other way round alot of bitches ive come across have been agressive with other dogs the males are more laid back i think by far thats why i got a male when i got kaiser id always had females with other breeds but my brother had a male and female staffy and the female is aggressive she attacked kaiser when he was 14 weeks old. Mine and my brothers male are sooo laid back it is untrue i dont for one minute believe the males are nasty obviously u will get some that are but id highly reccomend one

Re: boy vs girl?
A lot of it is how you bring them up. If they're socialised & trained there's no real reason they should be particularly agressive. That's not to say that all of them are friendly, some never like strange dogs, but they'll live with one no problem, especially if the other one's a girl!
You'll need to introduce them properly, let them get to know each other a bit if possible before the new one moves in. Try getting two tea towels & rub one on your present dog & let the new pup sleep with it, and vice versa. At least then the smell won't be strange when they first meet.

If u have a bitch already then definatley without doubt get a male. Two of the same sex together will need ALOT of time patience and work and even then u may find they will never live happily together and may have to spend alot of time separate. It will be lot easier trust me! lol

Re: boy vs girl?
Yes, I agree. If you're having two, by far the easiest option is having one of each!

Re: boy vs girl?
Agree with all the above - if you have a bitch already then definately get a boy. Whilst it will not guarantee the two dogs will get along this stacks the odds greatly in your favour and it would be the exception not the rule if they couldn't co-habit.
Just a thought - there is nothing wrong with getting a pup now Milley is 16 months but if it was me I would wait at least another 6 months for her to mature a bit more as in my eyes she is still quite a pup at that age and it's amazing how much hard work having two little trouble makers is.

Yep agree with that as well....although it will be completley fine 2 get a pup now the older milley is the easier u will find it lol. I speak from experience btw, i have Ty whos 13 months male and kaos 5 months male. We rescued kaos privatley at 11 weeks and although i wouldnt change a thing i can tell u having to males is hard work but most of all having 2 pups is hard work lol espeacially as kaos is maturing sexually now (give me strength!)

I got my pup when he was 15 weeks old and he is not at all agressive my 2 bitch staffs would be more agressive towards him.

Re: boy vs girl?
I would definatly get a dog. My bitch was 4 before I got another and after talking to a lot of people decided to have 1 of each sex. I definatly feel you have more of a chance of them getting along but then they will probably mate if there not neutered so there is that to consider. I didnt think my girl would like another dog in the house as she has a lovely nature loves people but not really bothered about other dogs.I bought the dog and they have been inseperable ever since they love each other its a big decision and no 2 stories are the same good luck

Re: boy vs girl?
Lozzy- i have had 2 male staffies and both have been sooks, Nitro(my avartar pic) was the biggest sook on the face of the earth and the most lovable.
I have a female border collie x jack russell who is actually the most vicious(she actually got Nitro in the eye and he lost his eye). Get your new one from a reputable buyer or a rescue dog that has a great temperament, then u can't go wrong.
I certanly wouldn't have 2 females together, like their human counterparts they are likely to fight to see who is top bitch. But it's entirely your decision, your little girl is a cutie.

Re: boy vs girl?
My 2 bitches worked out very well because once i got my younger bitch my older bitch treated her as her own pup and mothered her and also pretective when my other dog came into the household.

Re: boy vs girl?
C Lozzy u have different opinions from everyone, so it's up to you.
Hollie- u r lucky, i was afraid to get a female as i know what Mia is like mind u she's the same with Harley as well, she's also protective of him and when he was a puppy she used to lie down like she wanted him to feed.

Thanks everyone the feedback is much appreciated
We defo think a male is the way to go I have heard a lot of stories of bitches fighting to be top and would love miley to fall in love. Think we are going to wait till miley is nearer two as i dont want her to go backwards!!

Re: boy vs girl?
You're welcome Lozzy and you don't have long to wait until Milley is two. I think you'll also find it much better getting a pup in 7 to 8 months time rather than round the winter months. My last was a winter pup and it made toilet training so much more hassle because as we all know too well - Staffies hate the rain lol

My older bitch was about 8 when sukie came in, although she was a very afraid pup which is why i think they got on so well.
