Internet using a dongle?

Internet using a dongle?
Does anybody use a dongle and know how long it sould last? Basically just got a new pc and its seems to be gobbling it up. I pay £15 for 3mb which lasts 30 days (I think).
In the past that has lasted but soon I'm going to have to put on another £15 which will expire after the initial 30 days! Wether I have used up the allowence or not.
I swear I remember someone telling me to turn off automatic updates, would this help?
I am a computer dunce and am very confused.com so if any of you lovely people can help then please do!

Re: Internet using a dongle?
Mmm thats what I thought. Not using anything else just here really, I thought maybe downloadiing the antivirus registering might have been it, but its seriously just eaten it since then.
It gives me the option to choose updates, could that help and how would I know what to choose? Atm it seems to be downloading updates all the time, don't get it, but also don't want to ruin yet another pc!

Re: Internet using a dongle?
but you can turn them off but you need to go around to someone house and update them once/twice a week becasue keeping your laptop updated is impointant
Re: Internet using a dongle?
Thats the thing steve, I don't have a landline to get unlimited broadband I need one which is more expensive (and I seriously don't need that atm). If I went to someone who has broadband how would it work? As I can always update at mums but this pc isn't connected to her internet if that makes any sense!
Dk it has usually been fine but with my new pc, which is quicker its just gone!

Re: Internet using a dongle?
No lol, she hates the pc as much as me and I doubt she'll ever let me tap into her net. If I went somewhere with wi-fi could I do it?

Re: Internet using a dongle?
Im using a dongle atm til sky fits my line and broadband in 2 weeks cos virgin are pants. To tap into a wireless network, all you need is the passphrase which is on the side of the router. I do it all the time.

Re: Internet using a dongle?
I see. I have a friend who has a 3G plug in for his laptop. It's like wifi but more similar to your phone service. Is it similar to this?

Re: Internet using a dongle?
Janey £15 for 3mb is pants. I pay £15 for 5gb. 1000 mb = 1gb so you have a really raw deal. Did you mean gb instead of mb? 3mb would not last you 30 days. That wouldnt last me 3 days!!

Re: Internet using a dongle?
I'm with vodafone on contract but I've just bought a new laptop, and got a 3 dongle on a 30 day rolling contract so that I'd have internet between now and the time my sky gets fitted. I was with virgin for internet but they are so incredibly rubbish, I switched. There was no way I was going to go 2 weeks without the forum after having gone a month without while waiting for virgin to go in.

Re: Internet using a dongle?
Yes its 3 on the dongle. I really like it. Its quick and easy to connect, and the internet runs really fast with it. The signal is very high too although that obviously varies depending on where you are. Does 3 gb really last you 30 days? I reckon I'd need about double that for a month cos I am always on the net.

Re: Internet using a dongle?
Forgot to say, 3 have just been voted the best internet mobile provider as well. Their phones and call plans are pants, but their internet is brilliant.
