Summer's 1st walk
Hi all,
Summer is allowed to go for her 1st walk on Tuesday and I was just wondering how long we should take her out for, I realise that we shouldnt walk her for hours, poor thing would have no legs left, she will be 12 weeks, so dont want to push her.
Thanks

Re: Summer's 1st walk
Awwww, how exciting. I remember our first walk.
I'm not an expert but I would suggest you start off with a short 10 / 15 minute walk as she's still so young. You may find she does more sniffing than walking.
How is she with a collar and lead? Has she been wearing it around home for practice?
Good luck, and don't forget the camera.

Re: Summer's 1st walk
I would think no more than 15 or 20 minutes. She will probally spend alot of time sniffing and pulling so I wouldn't worry about overdoing it until she gets comfortable. Hope you both enjoy

Thanks all, tried the harness on her a few times and she hates it, she also hates a collar, she has issues with her kneck, so have a feeling it will a fun exercise all round, trying to get the harness on and not losing any fingers is going to be the major challenge lol am going to keep trying this weekend around the house and garden and see how we fare.
Thanks again, am so excited!!!!

Re: Summer's 1st walk
How did the walk go? My daughter took Millie out today for her first walk and she loved it. She forgot all about chewing the lead and walked brilliant. She even met loads of the kids that live around here and despite us worrying she licked them all - no biting! Thank goodness hope it continues like that.

Re: Summer's 1st walk
Sadly the walk didnt happen last night as it was tipping down all afternoon and through the night, me and the kids dont have a problem with rain but Summer does and didnt want her 1st walk to be associated with something she hates, so she is going tonight, the weather looks ok and am sure we can rush her out in between the breaks of rain lol, cant wait, kids are nagging me to death.
Put the harness and lead on her today and she flopped straight onto her back, so have a feeling it isnt going to go as planned, never mind she'll learn to love it, well, she better lol

Hope the walk went well. Tinkerbell hates the rain too and refuses to walk in any puddle no matter how little it is

Re: Summer's 1st walk
Well we took her out last night and it was so funny, she was walking all over the place, like she was drunk, kids loved it, they cant wait to take her out again.
I took her out again this morning and she was great, only problem i have is she insists on walking across in front of me, she gonna break my neck if i'm not careful!
She doesnt like blackbirds, she saw one and decided mommy had to pick her up, she was shaking like a leaf poor thing, also pushbikes. Bumped into my mate with her collie who decided to bark and growl at her, thought she would be scared, but she just stood there looking at him as if to say 'Is that all you got big man'
So all in all 2 good walks, although she never did her business on either of them, oh well, she will get the hint soon enough I suppose.
Thanks all

Re: Summer's 1st walk
Aww bless her, sounds like she and you are really enjoying walks!
I have no advice over the walkign in front of you. Tinkerbell does this too the only way I seem to be able to stop her is to tell her to heel so she is walking by the side of me!
When you see her go to the toilet at home, either a wee or a poo. Say a word such as "toilet" and when she has finished praise her. She will then learn to associate the word with the action of going to the toilet, which means when you are out on your walk you can actually tell her to go. It will take time though as she is still so young, but it does work. I did it with my sheepdog when he was a pup because he would save his toileting duties for when we got home no matter how long we were out for.
And I have done it with Tinkerbell too, as the previous owners (we think) didn't walk her and she didn't know that it was ok to go to the toilet on a walk so she would save it up for the garden!

Re: Summer's 1st walk
Skibadee hates the rain, I tell her not to come out and when she does if she gets a single drop of rain on her she scowls at me like its my fault its raining! Then she procedes to hide under anything she can; cars, bushes, signs its so funny. And she walks as slow as she can with her head nearly touching the floor!!!
