Hi everyone new here, would appreciate some help plz
Hi everyone, this is my first post, we have had our new staffy for about 7 weeks now,he is 8 months old and his name is buster. He is going through a phase of nipping and biting, when he does this we are telling him no in a firm voice ,and if he carries on we say no again and put him outside for a few minutes, he knows he has done wrong because as soon as we pick him up to put him outside,he puts his sad told off face on,is this the right thing to do?
Also, when family members or friends come in, or we come in for being out for a long time,he greets us by jumping up and biting, which we obviously no longer enjoy. We have just started to be more strict on this, by completely ignoring him and then saying the word OFF in a firm voice and then SIT. i have read about these methods online, and just wondered if anybody here has had some success by using these same methods??
Thankyou.

Hiya and welcome, to me it sounds like you are doing everything right. You can try ignoring him when he jumps at you too, turn your back, they hate to be ignored, its just about persistance and training, and make sure everyone in the household, friends included are all consistant in his training too

thankyou for the reply, yeh we will continue to use these methods then. Its quite annoying though when friends and family come in and think that the jumping up is cute and say that he's only doing it because hes a puppy and that he will grow out of it,when am not to confident he will inless taught otherwise. We have become more strict now though so hopefully everyone will follow what we tell them to do.

Your completely right about him not growing out of it, he needs to be taught how to behave by you. Just be consistant and keep going with what you are doing and you will start to see results

Hi and welcome from me and Rocky
Advice as above, which ever way you decide to correct the behaviour keep at it. It sometimes takes a while for them to catch on. Good luck

Hi and welcome from us and Suki. You are using the right methods but everyone has to use them every time or the dog will become confused.

Hello & welcome to the forum.
No, he won't grow out of it unless he's taught that it's wrong & that means everybody has to do the same thing. If you say ""no, and your guests say "oh, isn't that cute?" he'll get confused.
The turning away & ignoring takes a little while to work, but has the best results long term. This is because the dog will want to be calm in order to get attention!

Thankyou all, he has definitely progressed with the random nipping and biting from the first few weeks we had him,he was very bad to begin with. But when he is greeting someone he has'nt seen in a few hours,or someone he has'nt seen at all before, his excitement seems to take over, which leads to the jumping up and biting.
Caryll, i agree totally, yesterday we even went as far as putting a poster with instructions of what to do when the dog jumps up, we have put this on the door in the hallway just before the door to where the dog will be, so hopefully everyone who comes in will read it and follow!

What we all have to remember is that the biting & jumping up are a natural way of greeting/playing with siblings & other dogs. We just have to make sure that they realise that it isn't acceptable to humans. It can be a repetitive job, but with consistency & patience, it'll work!
