Re: help to train staffie with cats
shouting is not going fix the problem, your dog is still a pup she still learning things are going have to teach her what right and wrong, it may take a while but be comsistent.
Re: help to train staffie with cats
I don't have any cats. There are a number of members that do though so I'm sure someone will be able to help.

Re: help to train staffie with cats
I do have a cat but ive been lucky with the dogs as they tend to leave him alone. He thinks hes a dog anyway so ends up laying, eating and playing with them. If the pups get a little rough he swipes them on the nose and they leave him alone

Re: help to train staffie with cats
my lot loves cats and i can't say i done much really.
I'd hold the cat on my lap allow the dogs to sniff it because most of the time its curiousity and that isn't satified it can turn in to frustration which can lead to aggression.Don't allow her to nudge the cat with her nose or try to paw it give a correction and if she carries on remove her from the room. You could have her on the lead, learn her body language and when you see a bad sign like intense staring or stiffening of the body give a correction.
Thats all i done to be honest now every cat my lot see they think they can lick and play with it like they did my old cat, They used to spend ages grooming each other and munching on each others ears etc.
If thing start working out that doesn't mean you can allow play immediatly give it time and only allow calm behaviour from both parties (meaning don't let the cat attack or chase the dog either, this wouldn't be fair and the dog can quickly learn you can not be trusted in controling this cat like you did him and may wish to take matters into their own hands kinda thing)

Re: help to train staffie with cats
I have ten cats and three dogs. I had to really be firm if the pups wanted to chase the cats and also a few of the cats gave them a surprise stab every so often just to make sure they knew who was boss :-). I always feed the cats first and the dogs have to sit and wait.

Re: help to train staffie with cats
My girl ( currently 9months ) has always wanted to play with the cats, but it is my cats that I have to train to be nice to her.....LOL
They let her know they are not interested.
Have your cats been around dogs before? as they may not want anything to do with Miya.
Good luck though

Re: help to train staffie with cats
Ours are really good with the cats, when the cats come out to play just watch them and teach you dog to be gentle, say good boy/girl when just sniffing or licking and then a clear No when trying anything you dont want. The cat will soon run off and the dog dont get to play so loses what it wanted, they eventually learn that if you want to play with cats you have to be gentle or they run off.
Unfortunatly if the cat runs the dog is gonna run its the chase instinct they have an I doubt you will stop that to be honest, all you can then do is just make sure your cat gets away safely. Unless you have 1 seriously incredable recall command in place.

Re: help to train staffie with cats
I am still training Summer with regards the cats, there is 1 that she will not go anywhere near, mind you, none of the other cats go near her either, I generally shout NO, LEAVE, and that works ocassionally, she has a habit of pinning 1 of the cats down, then i have to go and rescue the cat because she just lies there, that cat isnt very bright god bless her. It is showing some improvement and also the cats give her a bash, Summer also is never left with the cats, she is locked downstairs by the stairgate and the cats can jump this, or in the smaller cats case, she crawls under the slight gap underneath.

I have two cats and Saxon. They get along pretty well. I didn't really have to do too much. He still chases them around sometimes, but stops if I say "leave it."

Re: help to train staffie with cats
I sawed a bar out of my stairgate so the cats can get through but not the staffies , my elderly dog and the cats enjoy nesting on my superkingsize but the staffies think it is a wrestling ring and bounce like wee kids.

Staffie with cats
Enable the cat to feel safe and contained away from a loose dog until they have bonded. While training, allow the cat to climb up to a high level (or in a cat cage up high) out of the reach of the dog whom should be down below on the floor not allowing dog to jump up and scare the cat. Do training with the dog in front of the cat, making sure that the dog is totally focused on you and the treat while you work together allowing both cat and dog to see each other but not moving towards each other or in reach. Separate them in separate areas after each session. Do this over periods of time until dog becomes less interested in cat and stops moving towards the cat. Giving cat lots of attention while dog is absent boosts the cats esteem.
