strays
have been reading and hearing a lot lately about the number of stray dogs in teh rescue centres.
although like any decent person i cannot understand how anyone can abandon their dog i also cannot understand why the centres will not consider any adoption into the hiome of a responsible owner. there is a staffy pup 6 months old about in one centre that is described as fantastic basicaly. dog friendly people friendly child friendly. loves to play cuddle the usual stuff but the description says it should be the only dog in the home it is adopted into. why can they not consider a home with another dog in it. i just dont understand if these dogs need homes help them to integrate into a household with another dog if they are given the chance rather than keep them untill the dog is kennel crazey. i think somtimes if these centres like the Dogs Trust and RSPCA helped people more when they are aske for help that some poeple would keep their animals. if you are unemployed you will get help with a vet but if you are working but on the bread line you won't. an ounce of prevention is better than the endless strays surely.

Re: strays
The rescues HAVE to have rules like that or the dog will end up being returned to them......If it says dog only home there will be a reason for it. In this case i would say because its a young pup and needs alot of attention. Staff pups play very hard and may hurt another dog accidently, or if the owner has alot of other dogs may not have the time to train the pup in the way it should be trained. Rescues do a fantastic job with thousands of dogs and next to no help or money. You have to understand that most rescues will always take the dog back if the dogs new home doesnt work out. When the dog leaves they take in a new dog straight away if that dog is then returned to them a month later where do they put it if they are full? Rescues try to find the dog the perfect home and give it the best possible chance of it living there forever and not having it returned

Re: strays
i see your point, in some respects, i think the policy to rehome a dog into a home with no other dogs is best, but not in all cases, i am a very responsible staffie owner, but that isn't always going to be the case, i have known rescue centres to bend the rules sometimes, if they think the new owner is responsible and eperienced enough, knows the breed, and has the time, knowledge and patience required to allow the dog to settle in to the new home as easily as possible....
my 2 dogs loved it when i brought them home, but they still took a while to settle, and i was really anxcious about that, despite my knowledge and understanding of the breed!
i know that DT don't allow people in tenaments to rehome dogs, i think that is a bit harsh, as long as they have somewhere to excercise the dog i don't see a problem there
