My 17 week old pup is still biting! and being strange! help!
This is my 1st dog.
Me and my partner got him a while ago now, he is quickly learning and is soo great to have around the house!
But biting is a big problem. He understands 'No' and 'be nice' but around strangers he gets tooo excited and bites them in a playful way. Ive tried telling him to be nice around strangers but he gets too excited its like he cant hear me. I am worried that I'm doing something wrong and worried he might bite a child. He has plenty of chew toys when hes in a biting mood i give him something to chew. When other people are around its more interested in them than the toy! Any tips pleeeeeeeeeease!!
Oh and he now sleeps on his bean bag, he loves it.. it has his blanket that was on his crate from day 1 we got him. We put it in the bedroom he sleeps on it at night, we put it in his room while we are away and he sleeps on it (as far as i know, ive busted him crashed out on it a few times) and in the lounge (family room) while we watch tv etc, but lately he will turn his nose up to the bean bag and rather sleep on the floor. i don't let him on my couch I'm wondering if i should get him a new one? or some other sort of dog bed. Has anyone else had this happen?
Thanks for your time reading

With the biting your going to have to be very persistant with his training, make him sit and stay when visitors are there, use treats to keep his attention, a firm no. If he persists turn your back and ignore him. As you have noticed they do learn very quickly and with training he will learn what behaviour is acceptable and what is not, but its going to be your patience and also the visitors have to act the same way. If he carries on remove him from the room and have a time out.
I think dogs will sleep where they choose/allowed, you don't need to pander to him, although we all do hope this helps a little, good luck Xx

Biting can be an issue. They all do it and as pups they explore the world with their mouths and haven't learned how hard they are biting. Everyone in the house has to be consistant with training. If one person lets him get away with biting or encourages it than it can become a big issue.
As a breed they crave attention so if you turn your back and ignore him when he bites he will learn not to do it. I know your problem is with strangers but all training and habits start at home. Before you let him interact with a new person have him sit and wait patiently. Also talk to the person and let them know he is still learning and if he acts up to turn around and ignore him. With patience and consistency he will learn.

Dogs see hands as chew toys if they're being waved around when they're excited. Try asking people to fold their arms and not fuss him while he's excited upon greeting. When he calms down and sits, then they can give him a bit if fuss and if he starts biting, tell him no firmly and have them fold their arms again and ignore him.
As Jstaff says, good habits start at home, so if you and your family can start this behaviour, he'll learn faster. Good luck

Can't really add much to that! Visitors must be made to understand that he is 'in training' and must be treated the way you want. So, if you ask them to ignore him till he's calm, then they must.

As above, just patience and training.
Bruno is 8 months and he still mouths people but we give a firm no. I get people in the street greet bruno and they put their hands out and i give a firm no but they say oh he's alright, he's only a puppy, I then explain that he has to learn that it is not accectable to chew on peoples hand as he might do it to the wrong person and I or my OH will get into trouble plus we are trying to train him not to do it. We don't get many people round our house and they ones that do come round have their own dogs so they know to either give a firm no or turn their back on bruno and ignore him as he hates being ignored heehee
Bedwise can't really help with bed situation, Bruno has the run of the lounge/kitchen at night and we tried not to let him up on the sofas but his little face when we wouldn't let him on , well lets just say he sleeps on any sofa, but sometime he will sleep in his crate with the door open. But at the moment it is the sofas or the floor think he like the cold of the floor. but his bed that is normally in his crate has been destroyed a number of times, but the last time he ripped after me fixing, he managed to eat some of the stuff so i have taken it away from him and now looking for blankets for his crate.
Someone with more knowledge will be around to help soon

Saya had the same, she is now 26 weeks old, and only does it when she gets overexcited (which is most of the time with my husband or kid) But she does know what "ouch" means or "NO". So, keep the faith, it will all turn out well

Re: My 17 week old pup is still biting! and being strange! help!
you are your puppies pack leader, so you need to remind him that certian behaviours arent acceptable within the pack. If your pup is biting or chewing hands, avert his attention away from what he is doing by either clicking your fingers, clapping or a simple touch. Once his attention is taken away from the biting, then tell him "no" as you are the "Alpha" and you wont accept this behaviour. Get your visitors to ignore the pup when they enter your home until he is in a calm state of mind. If you or your visitors are touching him, cuddling or playing with him while he is excited and biting, he will think its ok to be in that state of mind and the behaviour is acceptable. Only give him affection when he is calm. He will soon learn that if he is being naughty, he will get no affection or attention only correction, but when he is being calm and in the right state of mind, he will be rewarded by affection from his pack leader. Try to walk him as much as possible. Exercise is always good for calming the mind and is also bonding time with his pack leader. Explain to your visitors that you are training your puppy and ask them not to acknowledge the pup until you say so. Once your puppy is calm, then they can give him affection, if he bites again, get your visitors to ignore him and you do the correcting. Repeat it as much as you have to. Dont remove him from the situation by locking him up or shutting him out as this does nothing for his training and can only fuel anxiety by being seperated from the pack and the exciting things hes missing out on. If you need to, leash him, this gives you control and gives him boundries.
Please be patient with him, firm with what you want and always give praise. Dogs look for direction so give him his boundries of what is acceptable and what isnt. And remember, puppies have short attention spans so be persistant with training but dont drag it out, the pup will get bored.
As far as the sleeping thing goes, he will sleep where he wants to, I wouldnt worry about it.
I hope this helps
