I need to know why??????
Hi all,
First time here.
I need some advice about my staffy cross Irish wolfhound. He is 4 years old, a rescue dog, and not neutered. I've had him from a pup, and never had any problems with him!
I also have a Bitch Jack russell whom is 6 months old and due in season anytime soon.
For the last three days he has began growling at my wife and I for no reason at all! Im concerened because I have a 16 month old daughter who loves to cuddle him, this has NEVER been a problem before, but like I said he groals at her too!
I just wanted to know if is behavour is because of my other dog begining her season or if I have to get him neutered?
Thanks for all replies in advance.

Re: I need to know why??????
it could be that, have a check to see if hes hurting anywhere and it would be a good idea to get him neutered if you have female dog in the house

Re: I need to know why??????
Was he a private rescue or from a rehoming centre?
TBH if you have a female and a male in the same household at least one should be done.
He is probably getting frisky due to fact the bitch is giving of a lot of sexy smells! lol

I take it he's a big lad?
It sounds as though your bitch is giving off scents he's never smelt before & although he likes them they're confusing him. He's probably warning you off her! You obviously can't allow this - as you say, you have a young child to think of.
I don't normally say this, but I do feel you should get him neutered and the sooner the better. Don't forget that the hormones will stay in his body for some months after castration and you want this over with asap.
Make an appointment at the vet, get him checked over to make sure he's healthy & then book him in.

Re: I need to know why??????
id say he a tall looking dog with a staffy head. ive seen plenty of staffys crossed with hounds over here in Ireland. they call them bull hounds, they look like monsters they use them for hunting deer

Re: I need to know why??????
Shame. I'd rather hoped they'd lose the hunting/killing instinct with the cross.

Re: I need to know why??????
unfortunately not, that was the whole idea to get a dog with the speed and stamina of a greyhound and the masculinity of the bully breed. these two combination's are lethal when it comes to hunting,

Re: I need to know why??????
i don't know that now but Irish wolfhounds are fast dogs, and have plenty of stamina they can run all day. probably fast for the first 100 yards but will slow down then. but will still keep going at a slower pace

Re: I need to know why??????
il send a pic of him tomorrow. He is very fast, lots of stamina and loves to sniff things! He loves chasing small creatures ( not that I let him ). He is a bit bigger than a staff, wire furr and big chest. I've never seen a dog like him! We only say he is crossed with an irish wolfhound because that is what our vet guessed he maybe crossed with, but not 100% sure.

Re: I need to know why??????
you would probbably find its staffy x lurcher..and that the lurcher was greyhound x deerhound or irish wolf hound, but more probbably deerhound.
Lovely looking dog though.

Re: I need to know why??????
Wow what a fantastic looking dog! I've not see them before either but I can see why thye are used for hunting. With that extra bit of bulk it could easily take down a deer.
I am anti-neuter aswell but agree with others on this post. If your bitch is due in season and he is growling at the people in his pack chances are he is reacting negatively to his own hormones and your JRT's.

Re: I need to know why??????
Hi all thanks for all of your help!
We decided not to give George the chop. He and Molly (my JRT) are getting on fine now. We are all happy with his behavour now, if anything Mollie is in charge of George!
Thanks again for all of your help,
George and Mike

Re: I need to know why??????
Glad the problem solved itself without anything too drastic! And George got to keep his crown jewels!! Lol, He was probably just being protective of your bitch the smells and hormones coming from her were new and unusual to both dogs.
