Stop...drop...roll
As you may know, I often take Roxy to the dog park for some fun and socialising, which she seems to love.
I have a question for you though...
When we arrive and she meets new dogs, or if we are there and a new dog arrives, when she meets them she does the whole "Stop, drop and roll" I know this is a sign that she is submissive, but is it a problem or just the way she is?
She seems fine with dogs her size or smaller, but is more submissive with the larger / taller dogs whether male or female.
She will run and play with them happily, but still continues to "stop, drop, roll". She is a very social dog with no agression at all, always wagging her tail etc....... but sometimes I wish that once she's done the initial meet and greet get to know each other sniff and things, that she would just run and play without dropping to the ground and rolling over so often.
She seems to have a great time, so I s'pose it's just her way

Re: Stop...drop...roll
My English Bulldog would do this alot even with the smaller dogs. She would just roll over and show her belly. I think it is just being submissive and communicating that she doesn't mean any harm.

Harv is exactly the same he's happy to play but continually drops to the floor and rolls on to his back and they then roll about, he's then up again running round but then down again. He is a very submissive dog though so i guess it's just him

Re: Stop...drop...roll
I think its an okay thing, I have been waiting for Russell to show some submissive behaviour to other dogs, because he's always the one jumping on top, he finally submitted yesterday to a little girl only a month older than him haha! I was impressed.

Re: Stop...drop...roll
It's just her nature - she wants to play, but wants all the other dogs to know she's not a threat! She repeats it every so often to remind them!

Re: Stop...drop...roll
I wonder if it could have something to do with the age of the dogs? My English Bulldog would do it with every dog she saw but Suki only does it for the older dogs.

when lemmy was a pup he would play rough with other dogs. one training session was learning to play nice and the trainer noticed lemmy was more dominant and rough and would jump up at the ther dogs so she brought her rotti in for a session of play. lemmy did his usual jump and the rotti slapped him down straight away he got more slaps than play that day but it taught him how to greet nicely. doggy etiquete is essential for our dogs to get on with others and if lemmy drops everytime anoter comes i dont mind because i would rather people see him as a nice dog than to always be the one that makes the other dogs submit. this doesnt make him soft because if another dog growls at him he will stand his ground.

Yeah Molly does the exact same thing and we are proud of it to be honest.
Just hope Duke learns to do this soon enough as he is the one always trying to climb up/jump up/chew (He is very young though 8 weeks lol), though Molly has started to put him in his place a little for now which is good as she was just letting him chew on her and do absolutly nothing about it and Jake my mums Jack Russell will soon tell him he aint happy if Duke keeps doing it when we go round me mums.

yep, same here. Bindi always drops when she sees a dog at least 10 meters away from us. It's funny, because people are less afraid of her, when she does that. Most of the dog owners just go , awwwww, look at that... Yep, she really is a killer queen. On her back.
