To Nueter or not to Nueter??
Im having a bit of trouble when deciding if i should get Maxxie Nueterd or not, alot of people have asked me when is he ready for mating as he is such a stricking gorgeous doggy. But im not sure, i know there are alot of dog being bread without a home for the puppies.... So im thinking Nueter him ... But then again, we might decide to breed him ....
Ive heard that mating can change the dog? dont know if thats true though!
Idk, Anyone Know the Pros & Cons?

Re: To Nueter or not to Nueter??
a dog can lead a perfectly normal life without been mated. in fact spaying a female or neutering a male helps them become a better pets, as they are not so anxious to search for a mate in an effort to relive their sexual tensions

Re: To Nueter or not to Nueter??
I've never had a problem with having un neutered dogs. Only one of my dogs was ever neutered and that was my first bitch who developed pyometra.
I found this site recently, which I thought has one of the more balanced views I've seen. Admittedly it's rather more against than for, but it poses some valid arguments:

Re: To Nueter or not to Nueter??
I have had many dogs, Blue is my first to get the chop. (yesterday in fact) But that was due to his temperment. I felt I had to to try and calm him down. All the other dogs I had I haven't felt the need to and had no problems. You will know your dog better than anyone else.
I think as far as health reasons go.....its decreases the chance of cancer in some areas but increases the chance in others so its pretty even.
I would only do it if his behaviour was been seriously effected by his urges and testostrone levels.

Re: To Nueter or not to Nueter??
female dogs can get the disease pyometra if they are neutered or not. pyometra can happen at any age whether she is bred or not,or whether its her first or tenth heat. although its usually more common in older dogs. the main risk for females is after 8 weeks after her peak (estrus cycle) has ended.

Both my staffies have been neutered, Nitro was the sweetest boy under the sun, while Harley is still a randy little bugger, he will try to hump Mia when she isn't looking(she's NOT fixed).

Personally I would have the op done but thats because I don't agree with unnessesary breeding, there are so many unwanted staffies out there its a shame to bring more into this world. But at the end of the day its your choice. As mentioned earlier there are pros and cons, I just think there are too many dogs holed up in shelters. Only my veiw though x

Yes ...over here in Australia there are so many unwanted but perfectly healthy dogs put to sleep each week.It is heart breaking. There are just far too many dogs and not enough ( good! ) homes for them, and they are purebreds and mongrels alike. So I would never want my dog to be responsible for bringing more dogs into an already overcrowded canine world. Jethro was desexed at 6 months.. and another advantage is that he doesn't * his leg all over things..in fact he mostly squats!! So cute !

Re: To Nueter or not to Nueter??
I think it is a personal thing really i personally wont neuter kaiser i have had no problems with him not being neutered and have even come across females in season and he hasnt even bothered. My brothers staffy was used as a stud dog for many years and he is still a great loveing boy who is scared of there cat lol so i dont think if yuou breed them it changes them in anyway but very dog is different.

I was told that if you neuter a dog at an early age they wont be as muscley or as big as they would of been when un-neutered as the te-testerone isnt there or somthing along them lines

Re: To Nueter or not to Nueter??
Not the medical deffinition I don't think but I've heard that too!! I think there is something to do with the testosterone which controls the growth hormone and tell it when to stop growing up or out,I read that they can get to tall if done as thier body doesn't know when they are tall enough!

Re: To Nueter or not to Nueter??
Part of the maturing process relies on testosterone in dogs & the equivalent (can't think of the right name!) in girls (it won't let me type the female name for a dog!). Whilst some dogs mature early & so early neutering won't make a lot of difference, other, more slow maturing dogs will remain very puppyish if they are neutered before they are mature.
And I'm not starting another debate by saying that!
Neutering is never a black-and-white issue. Everybody has different thoughts on the subject, and most of them have valid points!

Re: To Nueter or not to Nueter??
Its not something I would do I love the true dog testosteronzes and all but then breeding for the wrong reasons is a problem.
The genetic make up determines the shape and size of the dog although a neutered dog sometimes can have weight issues but thats simple up the excercise.
My female was very down and depressed before a season so I had her neutered and she was great after much happier.

Re: To Nueter or not to Nueter??
If mouse becomes like my lurcher (depressed, dosnt eat for nearly a month, gets stressy with people) then i will get her done, im not going to breed from her ever, as much as she would probbably have some nice looking good puppys, but unless there is an actuall reason that i MUST get her neutered then its not going to happen, its a un-nessisary operation imo.
Plus what alot of vets dont tell you (i think this is more with male rather than females) but when "done" there is a chance that if the operation isnt done propperly you could have a dog that is incontinant for the rest of its life.
(sorry about my spelling, its late).

Some dogs (and *) can suffer incontinence after neutering, but it isn't something that happens often. You're right, though, vets rarely give you all the facts.
When I first had Bandit, my first vet asked me when I was going to get him neutered. I told him I wasn't, and what were the reasons I should? What were the full pro's 7 con's? His answer? "You should go by what your vet says. Asking too many questions just confuses you!"
Not good enough!

Iv known of a few dogs that have had this happen & only after it happened did there vets say "oh yes, it is a possibility that this can happen", i can tell you they wernt best pleased.
The thing is, yes a vet does know more than you (or you would hope), but that dosnt mean they are always correct, you have to remember its your dog, you know how they are and what they need. The thing people need to remember is...the vets IS a business.
My original vet for mouse, told me they WOULD be seeing me when shes 6months to be spayed. To which after all the many many clerical errors i had already had with them, i changed to the vets that my other dog (that my dad pays for) is with.

ILovePrince wrote:You may not be planning to mate him but if it accidentally happens, that's at least 4 puppies being brought into this world when there are THOUSANDS without good homes and being euthanised every single day. Then if those puppies aren't neutered, they will breed and so on and so forth. So you see what I'm getting at?
Accidents do not necessarily happen. If Dempsey did mate a bitch by accident (virtually impossible because I have control at all times) and it was my fault I would pay for the bitch's owner to have the pregnancy terminated immediately. However, what responsible owner allows an in-season bitch to wander around off lead? If the oener is that irresponsible then they will probably mate the bitch anyway, and hang the consequences.

I'm all for the chop and snip Cassie and Taz first and only mating lasted less than 4 minutes and thats what? the time it takes to leave the room and make a cup off tea or use the bathroom. Why take the risk and the phycological problems that comes with terminations are rather high.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-neutering. I just think there are pro's & con's & nobody should just assume it's always the best thing. I think age & marurity should always be taken into account.

To the best of my knowledge * do not have psychological problems from termination. They wouldn't even know they were pregnant!
