Bit baffled...
About an hour ago, the dog went to jump on the sofa, and seemed to yelp, as if in pain. He yelped a couple more times. Hard to see where the source of pain is, as it is not visibly obvious. He seems to be moving a bit reluctantly, albeit he did go out for a walk, and managed that. He seems very crestfallen, and is slow to respond to his name, lying on the floor, very sorry for himself. I cannot fathom what's up. Any ideas?

Could be, must be something along those lines - one minute fine, the next not!
Odd that such a thing would make him non responsive to me, mind you.

True, and if it carries on then vets it is. I just know Moo has selective hearing when she isn't feeling up to speed, and the amount of times I've been to the vet just to be told that she'll be ok! Xx

I take it you've checked the paws & dew claws? Have you tried running your hands over him to see if he reacts to anything?

Re: Bit baffled...
If you don't find a cause when checking him over I'd go to the vet's immediately.. Yelping in pain and being unresponsive sounds very scary to me. Might be an upset stomach or something not too dangerous (like gas pains), but I wouldn't take the chance if it was my dog.. Better safe than sorry.
Re: Bit baffled...
hope he is better now, but yes I would be at least phoning the vets to see what they suggest if he is still not well...

Re: Bit baffled...
Hi, thanks for all the concern. He seemed to whimper a couple of times through the night, and was definitely still crestfallen this morning, taking 15 mins to even show his interest in breakfast, all very odd, all very inexpliable and sudden.
The kind of 'depressed' way that dogs get when they have had a bit of a virus, but of course, what he had wasn't at all consistant with a virus.
So, I weighed it up, and took the fella to the vets, by which time he was picking up a bit (typical!).
Explained the situation, and vet gave him the full MOT, checked all paws, stretch out his legs, all vertebrates in his spine, in case he had perhaps pulled something, dew claw, muscle, what not..
No reaction to any of that.
She did notice a sore looking bit inside ear, and I had not spied that.
She speculated that it could easily have been some sort of sting, if not indeed the theory of simply pulling a muscle.
She gave him a pain killer jab, and he has been fine since, back to normal.
Still no absolute answer though!

Yeah, I initially thought dew claw, but they were all there, and looked intact, but looking back, one time he did whimper in pain, was when I touched his head, close to his ear, but I didn't think about that at the time, as I had it in my mind it was foot/leg related.
Maybe something bit him in the ear, stung him, and that is how he reacted when I touched him there?
Vet thinks he was unresponsive and down, simply due to the fact that whatever it was had caused pain, plain and simple, and for a time, he was feeling somewhat sorry for himself.
