Mixing different age staffys
Hi everyone..an new here.
And need advice.
I have a very chilled submissive staffy. 5 yrs old.
And spayed female
We've had an opportunity to add to our pack.
A 6 month old female staffy
My concern/question is
Would this be wise for both dogs.
I appreciate that it's entirely dependent on the dogs.
But wanted some opinions on this.

Re: Mixing different age staffys
Hello & welcome.
I think the general rule is to not have two of the same sex, but of course, there are always exceptions! Nifty on this forum has three girls, so it obviously can work!
I would introduce slowly & carefully, remembering that the 6 month old is going to be very over the top with play etc & your current girl might take exception to it.
Is the youngster a rescue?

Re: Mixing different age staffys
Wonderful advice.
Firstly we'll go on a distanced walk
Slowly getting closer
However, a very slow integration, home wise isn't an option...
The lady wants the pup gone, and say's she'd be too upset to take back.
.and would be very "distressing" for her.
Our hands are really rather tied.
Either it's a dog walk and assess situation.
Or we don't even chase the issue.
Sooooooo difficult...
My neighbour has had 3 generations of staffy under one roof.
All getting on fabulously.
But...maybe a one off.
Not sure....

Is your dog crate trained? Is the youngster crate trained?

Re: Mixing different age staffys
Might be worth getting a couple of crates so that you can separate them if things become a bit much. Baby gates would as well, especially in the early days (until hey both realise they can jump them!).
Why does the lady need to get rid of the youngster?

Re: Mixing different age staffys
Ahh yes
Separation.
Even for our older dog?
Very good idea.
Something we never thought about.
Her reasons are.
Husband has become disabled. And is more reliant on wife for help.
But I honestly think as she purchased 2 pups at same time.
Maybe not more than she bargained for.
Stair gate is good call...it's like having a bloody baby all over again
Although our dotty...can jump a bloody fence now...as our neighbours discovered.
We had one, and although she is fully trained to absolute perfection...it was sometimes hard. Stubborn lol.

Re: Mixing different age staffys
Yes, two pups can be really hard work!
I think even your current dog will appreciate a comfortable safe place to retreat to! Just make sure that if one goes in to a crate voluntarily, don't allow the other to pester them. A crate isn't a punishment tool, but a safe retreat or a safe place for 'time out'.
