Settling in my puppy Empty Settling in my puppy

Post by Daisy doo Fri Mar 18 2022, 15:05

Hello everyone,
Need some help with my new puppy .
We have a staffie of 5 years old and a puppy of 9 weeks old .
When they are being left for a short period of time the puppy is put in her pen and our other dog is allowed in the living room .
The puppy starts to cry which then starts our other dog to cry and howl .
Help what can I do to help them both from getting stressed.

Does the pup sleep in her crate at night & if so, does she cry?

questions:
1) is the older dog interacting fine with the puppy okay daily?
2) is the older dog allowed the roam of the house and able to get out of the puppys sight?

If the puppy has attached to the older dog, and it to them, they could be just having separation anxiety. Its tricky because you can keep them apart and make it worse..or keep them together and make it worse. Right now the puppy is probably very confused, scared and anxious - they have just been taken from constant company to being alone and they see another dog who they can't be with. Will the older dog sleep in the same room as the puppy? That way they both have the company but can't get up to much.

So my older dog is interacting with the puppy really well and my older dog can roam the house and go somewhere else if he feels he needs to . My only concern is that they like to play fight and if we leave them together would they know when to settle and give each other a break . I just hate the thought of them both getting stressed and anxious.

Congratulations on your new puppy family member.

Are both of your staffies of the same sex ?
If your older staffy stays in the living room, where is the puppy’s pen (can they see each other) ?

I would not leave your dogs together and let them dictate time out. Your puppy is too young to know and your older staffy needs to be able to get away from an over exuberant puppy. You should always be the one to regulate and anticipate before things get out of hand.

I personally never leave my 2 staffies together when we’re not at home (work) as I would never want staffy play to go too far. My girls are in their playpens which are side by side. The panels are only 60cms high so the girls could very easily jump over but they don’t.

My older dog is a boy and the puppy is a girl . Her pen is in the dining room and he has the run of downstairs so she can see him . We have got them a kong today to fill with some treats to hopefully settle them both before we leave them to see if that helps . I am just hoping in time the puppy will settle down . She was with 7 other puppies and has now my older dog to have as company I think she is having separation issues because he is not close by her . Thank you for your replies it will helps

At 9 weeks old, your pup has been at your home a week max.
Make sure her pen is as cosy as possible and that she associates that with positive things, not that it becomes a punishment and the place she’s sent when you leave.

I would feed my pups in their pen, they get a treat when they go in there, I put the pups in there and then take them out after a certain time so it stays positive. Have her object with the litter’s scent in her bed and I also had a big cuddly toy for each of my girls for them to cuddle up to (see baby Nifty below)
Maybe rub an object over your boy and give it to her so even if she can’t see him, he’s close to her
