Harnesses
Hi guys, apologies if this thread already exists! Bear is currently using the Julius K9 mini which is suitable up to 15kg. However, at 17 weeks old and 14.5kg it looks like we’re going to have to get the next size up for him.
We’ve seen a lot of posts on the internet regarding the pros and cons of a harness, especially the posts aimed at shoulder issues and was wondering if there was a particular brand or type of harness that doesn’t have these issues? Views from owners with actual experience of this particular issue would be greatly received, as too would any other Staffy owners who use harnesses. We just want our boy to have the best start in life. Thank you
P.S. the photo was him at 14 weeks!

Re: Harnesses
Okay, so for a 'puller' the Julius is probably not the best. You would be better looking at harnesses such as the Ruffwear, which support the chest & don't restrict the elbows/shoulders. Also, if your dog tends to pull backwards, a Julius is really easy to slip out of! Not saying it isn't a good harness - it is- but it has its limitations.

Thankfully he doesn’t go backwards on us…yet! I’ll explore the Ruffwear harness. Thank you

These look nice, but be aware of some of the poor ratings re: sizing.

Re: Harnesses
We’ve gone for the next size up from what we’ve measured him at. I can’t get over how big he is?? 17 weeks and pushing 15kg!! He’s got very little puppy fat left and doesn’t look fat. I’m assuming he’ll start to plateau soon?

Re: Harnesses
Always go for the best you can afford. Sometimes it's best to go cheaper when they're still growing & not at full strength!
My lad is 27kg & 11 months. Yes, he's a Bull Terrier & therefore bigger anyway, but we bought a Ruffwear harness from the outset. He's on his second one now, and that will last him for probably another 6 months, maybe longer. There is no wear on it (neither was there any wear on the first one, he just outgrew it).

Re: Harnesses
I’m a big fan of ruffwear too.
My girls as puppies had size xs.
Now they both wear s, though Nifty would probably be better in the size up as she’s a chunkier build.
Another harness I particularly like is this one
https://www.amazon.co.uk/DOG-Copenhagen-Hundegeschirr-Harness-Black/dp/B08DJ81RDS/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2Z7HJWR1MGMQ4&dchild=1&keywords=copenhagen+dog+harness&qid=1634962797&sprefix=Copenh%2Caps%2C152&sr=8-5
There is a wide choice in this type of “Y” harness on the market but I do agree with the others in terms of choosing the best you can afford.
I have already used the harness Jen recommended, puppy size, and very happy with it.
I bought these
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adjustable-Reflective-Lightweight-Breathable-Training/dp/B088D7C78C/ref=sr_1_1?crid=20J6BB3DKBXIL&dchild=1&keywords=B088D7C78C&qid=1634962882&sprefix=b088d7c78c%2Caps%2C129&sr=8-1
but I do not recommend. The padding is thicker so the harness is more rigid. However the biggest problem is the width of the “Y” part that runs between the front legs which is wider than the ruffwear so more prone to rubbing and not suited to a narrower chested dog.

Thank you ever so much for your reply. We’ve gone with the first option in a large. Will see how he gets on with it. If I get a bonus next year I’ll look into the Ruffwear option

Re: Harnesses
They’re so similar. Probably all made in the same factory with different labels added to them! It’s arrived this afternoon. It’s a great fit as it’s adjustable from all 4 corners. Looks like good quality too. Will put it through it’s paces and see how we get along with it
