New pup?
Evening folks
As some of you know we lost our Alfie just over a year ago and he left a massive hole in our lives. We are now ready to add another chapter to our staffy life. The family just doesn't seem complete without a little staffy bouncing about the place.
We are very excited to be having our first viewing on Sunday.

Oh how lovely.
Wishing you love at first sight if it’s meant to be
Do let us know how it goes either way

Re: New pup?
Obi is settling in nicely. First impressions are he's a feisty one. Full of energy and into everything he seems more terrier like than bully. We've had to block if parts if the garden
He's challenged me the first couple of days but had a nice little sit session with treats today. We all absolutely adore him and can't wait to get him out and about.

Re: New pup?
Good morning from Obi.
Settling in really well. We can get him out and about on Sunday. He's been a little bit bitey but he's teething terrible. Obi had his first bath last night and hated it

Obi no walkies
Hi guys
So for the last 3 days we've been able to walk Obi outside. We'll walk would be a stretch.
The thing is he flat out refuses to walk. I've taken my time with him, used treats to encourage him, tried walking him with a calm well behaved older dog and some gentle nudging along but he's having none of it.
I've had the pleasure of 2 Staffords in my life and have never experienced this before.
Any tips would be great.
One thing I was pleased with was his introduction to the older dog. He was the perfect gent. That was until he had grown comfortable with the other dog and decided it was playtime

Re: New pup?
So it could be alot of things.
Are you using a collar or a harness ?
Have you clipped a lead on ?
Does he only wear these when you want to go for a walk ?
Are you always taking the same route ?
Is your walk not too long ? (5 minute per month of age rule)
Is he blocking on the way out or on the way home ?
He’s only about 3 months old I think, have you tried carrying him to set him down further on a new route for him ?
Is it not too hot where you are and surface could be too hot for paws ?
Still lots of other ideas …

Re: New pup?
Hi Nifty
Thanks for the reply
He's wearing a harness. I clip a lead on just before we leave.
He only wears this when we go for a walk.
I have taken several routes and even a short drive to a small park nearby.
I've literally been around the block with him. Normally a 10 min walk.
He's blocking both on the way out and way home.
I have tried setting him down at different points of the walk but to no avail.
It's not too hot where we are in the north of England.
I know he's still young and im sure he'll be away soon. I guess it's a little a bit strange as I've never experienced this with any pups.

Re: New pup?
Ok, so more questions (sorry)
What kind of harness are you using ? Check that it isn’t a model which restricts his movement (typically shoulders) or rubbing and that it isn’t too bulky for him. I really prefer the Y shaped harnesses and have a pet hate for the T shaped julius ones.
Do you have a garden or access to a park or equivalent ? Pups have a very strong drive to follow so maybe it might be worth working with him in this area playing “come” and “follow me” wearing harness but no lead. Just to ensure he’s comfortable about the harness and does not associate this with something which could be daunting for him (leaving home cocoon to go onto funny surface with lots of big noises)
Then I’d guess that he’s going through a phase where he needs extra special reassurance from you. If you set him down and he does a step or 2, exaggerated praise with treats/toy/cuddles and all the rest and call time out. Repeat for a few sessions and see how he reacts. You need to go back to his baby steps to get past this small setback.
He just sounds like an overly cautious little guy but you’ll soon be on your way
