recall - Crazy Staffy/hound cross with zero recall and getting worse Empty Crazy Staffy/hound cross with zero recall and getting worse

Hello - I've not posted on here for a while but I always love reading all the updates and stories from new members.
I have a specific issue I'm hoping someone who can help me with though it's really a "hound" behaviour rather than a Staffy behaviour that's becoming a problem.

My Staffy Rupert's best friend, Trevor, is a Staffy Beagle (or similar) mix. He's never been very good off lead in terms of coming back but now his recall is completely out of the window because he is so fixated on fox smells in the park. I've fostered a lot of dogs and they all love chasing foxes but Trevor's drive to find them is beyond anything I've ever witnessed. The other day in the park, I heard what I thought was a man trying to bang open the locked metal entrance gates to the woody enclosure behind them. In fact it turned out it was Trevor, who repeatedly ignored any calls to get him to come back. He will actively run in the opposite direction, partly because his training has never been very good but more importantly, I think, because he has a hound's complete obsession with scenting down wild animals. This behaviour has now repeatedly meant him going AWOL for up to an hour and a half at a time in various parks.

My question is - what is the best way to deal with this? I know that Beagles often end up in rescue because of exactly this difficulty with their recall.

To be honest I haven't had much in the way of dealings with beagles, but maybe using a long line may help in the short term?

I know hounds can be quite driven.

I know of a few people with beagles and all are on long lines.
A friend of mine has one which went awol for 2 days in the woods nearby Surprised .
A GPS collar is an alternative, I suppose

We had a beagle when we were kids, nightmare for recall! Lost her many times on walks & she'd come home an hour later Rolling Eyes I could only agree with the others to use a long line & practise recall on it. Have high value treats like chicken or sausage & keep practising Smile

I've heard the same about Beagles that their recall is terrible.

Absolutely no experience with beagles, but from the above comments it doesn't sounds like their recall is too great regardless of the training Laughing

Maybe go back to basics, training lead, recall treats. What about seeing if theres a field that you can book for so long. There seems to be loads of them popping up everywhere. It might be you stick to lengthy lead walks and find a fenced and secure place you can let her have a good run a couple times a week? thinking
