I know merle Stafford can no longer be registered (since 2010) but the KC have announced a broader ban on the colour pattern...

Interesting indeed! In breeds other than the ones mentioned it is highly undesirable because it means there was an obvious cross somewhere in the past. As far as i know many (if any) don't require DNA testing like they do in horse societies so it leaves things open to fabrications.
