Buffalo Horns.
About a week ago I bought a buffalo horn for Puddin'. She loved it and was a bit obsessed with it. Three days ago she wouldn't touch it or any other toy including her favourite teddy. We took her to the vet and ended up realising she had hurt her mouth. Today she went in for a dental check where they discovered her two top canine teeth had cracked in two. They were removed and now she's out of it on the couch. I was wondering if anyone has given them to their staffies and were they ok?

Oh poor Puddin. Yes Misty loves her buffalo horn, she's always had them with no problem.
Hopefully Puddin will recover soon xx

Re: Buffalo Horns.
Get better soon Puddin I've heard that they splinter so I've never risked them with Katy, she has antlers instead.

Poor Puddin’
I’ve not given buffalo horns, have previously given antlers until I researched and realized they’re really not great for teeth.
Now I give Yakers as a very occasional treat, and the end bit gets microwaved into the popcorn texture to finish off.

Re: Buffalo Horns.
I have the two teeth they removed, the enamel has literally been peeled off the front of the teeth. They must have been really painful. She's not in the best of form since understandably. Since the surgery she won't drink I'm now looking for tips on how to encourage her.

Re: Buffalo Horns.
Does she like fruit? I would try her with watermelon or other melons as they have high water content At least then she will get some fluid in her until she feels ready to drink. Katy loves gala melons

Re: Buffalo Horns.
Cook chicken for her and keep the cooking juices to dilute to see if she’ll drink it ?
Oh, and try tempered (room temperature) water to ensure it’s not too cold when she drinks.
Cold water on sensitive teeth isn’t any fun !

Re: Buffalo Horns.
For a while, stag bars were 'the' thing to give a dog, but I've heard of so many dogs either splitting their teeth on them, or wearing the teeth down - either way they have to be extracted!
Yakkers aren't so bad, especially if you microwave them.
Whimzees are a great alternative to dentastix.

Re: Buffalo Horns.
She was checked today in the vet, she managed to tear her stitches. So she's on a soft diet for a couple of weeks, extra painkillers, and an antibiotic. She's in better form and drinking a bit more. She's snuggling her favourite toy in the picture, usually she's disemboweling it.

Re: Buffalo Horns.
Awww, she does have a lovely coat.
Is she drinking ?
I see she’s wearing a collar, maybe check that the buckle and/or ID tags aren’t jingling against her water bowl when she’s drinking ? That could put her off too.

Re: Buffalo Horns.
Perhaps give her neck a rest and take the collar off while at home with the teeth being removed her mouth will be all swollen. Perhaps loosen the collar a little to ease any discomfort the clasp could be digging into her neck its not a criticism just trying to ease puddin's discomfort. Hope she gets on ok with painkillers and antibiotics

Re: Buffalo Horns.
Her collar was on because we just came back from a walk. It looks quite tight but I can get my hand under it comfortably. I is only used a a form of Id when out. She wears a Julius k9 harness also when out.
