Which parent responsible ? Empty Which parent responsible ?

Post by Nifty staffy Sun Sep 09 2018, 15:30

Found a litter of staffies which out of 7, 4 are red and 3 are black and tan !
Is this likely to come from mum or dad, or impossible to tell ?

Impossible to tell unless one of the parents is black & tan - but there's obviously been some sort of cross in the background!!

Neither parent is black and tan (dad brindle pied, mum red) but I suppose it means that all 7 pups are potential carriers of b&t genes so even the reds should not reproduce.

Genetics is complicated but truly fascinating !

The trouble with black & tan is that it's a dominant gene. So if a pup has one copy of the gene it will be black & tan. The reds should be okay, but I'd be concerned about where the gene came from originally as it could only be introduced by an out criss (ie a black & ran different breed). Therefore, in theory, all the pups are actually cross breeds!

Oh, ok.
To be honest, they’re definitely not conform my understanding of breed standard, even just judging by their heads.
They’re still asking 1000€ for the b&t and 1200€ for the reds. Surprised Bearing in mind that the b&t are absolutely unconfirmable so not to breed from in terms of paperwork alone. Oddly enough, both parents are KC registered and confirmed
