Prospective owner from Ireland
Good evening all,
My partner and I are thinking about buying a 12 week old Staffy pup (female). We have a six year-old daughter and my partner is a little apprehensive about the stigma attached to this breed.
Can someone please advise us as to whether it is wise (or not) to bring a Staffy into a household with a child.
We have two little dogs (one male, one female) who are chihuahua x's. They are both very easy going and quiet in nature so I don't think there would be a problem with a new dog entering the fray.
I have done research online and many people are of the view that a Staffy is an ideal family dog.
I really want to put my partner's mind at ease and would appreciate some helpful feedback.
Thanks guys.
P.S. ''Fairytale'' is the name I am thinking of for 'her'.

Re: Prospective owner from Ireland
I'd have no problems in getting a staff with a 6 year old child provided the child is taught the rules as well as the dog!
All children, no matter how young, must be taught to respect a dog (especially a pup that can get tired really quickly & need space & quiet to rest sometimes) and to know when to leave it alone. But that's the same with any dog, any breed!
Out of all the breeds, the staff is the one I would trust most with kids. They have a tremendous rapport with children & a high pain threshold, so even if a child is a little rough, the dog is unlikely to react negatively.
I would also advise supervision whenever they are together until you are sure that they are both quite used to each other. That way you can stop rough play (by both the dog & the child) before it gets out of hand.
Go for it, she looks gorgeous!

Yes, YES and Helllll Yeah,
i have 2 rescue Staffs and a 4 year old, He wrestles with them, lays with them, plays with them. They look after him, spoil him with kisses licks and cuddles.
Any dog who is looked after and brought up properly shown respect and knows the rules and boundaries will be an asset to any family and a joy to be around.
GO FOR IT Fairytale is beautiful =D xx

Good advice also please understand that Staffies require alot of exercise. As long as everyone in the house teached the dog the same command and follows the same rules in training and on what isn't allowed it should not be a problem. She is awfully cute.

Re: Prospective owner from Ireland
I would also definitely recommend a staffy with kids, i don't have kids myself, but my harvey is brilliant with kids especially younger ones and he knows he has to be more careful with them but he really enjoys following them about and playing with them
Oh and hi!

Re: Prospective owner from Ireland
welcome to the forum.
I agree with all the above in regard to a staff and growing up with kids.
The only thing that I wondered about is the 2 other dogs you already have, (but I am ignorant of the breed and don't know very much about chihuahuas).
Staffs are very loyal and loving dogs but they do demand a lot of attention in the house, so you will have to balance things with kids, other dogs etc.
Fairytale is a stunner and I don't think I could turn my back and say NO!

Re: Prospective owner from Ireland
My boys have been fantastic with my 3 and 7 year old Ty my oldest follows the 3 year old round all day and is her little sidekick, he even helped her to walk, she used to pull herself up on him and use him to hold onto while he walked slowly around the house looking pleased with himself. You say u have two other easy going quiet dogs.......just bare in mind that if ur pup was easy going and and quiet then there would be a problem! Staff pups can be a bit of a handfull and need a firm but fair consistant owner to teach them right and wrong! x

Hi
I also have a chihuahua X and she gets on with my Staff fine. I also have children aged 9 and 7 and I would say that Clover (my staff) is better with them with Roxie. She is very patient and doesnt mind if my youngest plays a little rough with her.

Re: Prospective owner from Ireland
I have a 9yr old daughter and a 7yr old son and they have done great with Blue.It does require a fair amount of work for the whole family.Especially in the early weeks as the nipping is the first hurdle to overcome.
The breed does require a lot of exercise and attention and if you have the time they are a great breed. There are a few important things to consider when getting a staffy like socializing the dog from an early age.It is very important to bring the dog around as many new people and animals as possible. The staffy also needs a strong leader with consistent training Exercise Discipline Affection is the model I have been using with Blue and so far it is working well.
Fairytale is a doll and I'm sure she would make a great addition to your family but she is definitely no chihuahua.

Hi all,
Well we have just arrived home with ''Sanibel''. We have decided not to call her ''Fairytale''.
So far, so good! She survived a three hour car journey with no mishaps!
