Advice on chewing and biting

I relise puppys will chew and bite but roxy is being a little monkey at the moment seems totaly not intrested in her toys but more into my clothes and the furniture, any advice i try a loud tone in my voice and she does stop but seems to continue, i do understand she is a puppy but any advice would be fab. Thanks guys xx

i know its hard but try and ignore her,pups hate to be ignored ,or when she is biting replace with one of her toys and play with her,people do make a yelping noise and that some times helps too,she will grow out of it and i remember what its like having a pup hanging off your trouser leg as you are walking along

Agree with Stella's advice above but would add that you should replace that table/human leg with a toy and make the toy the best fun ever hence promoting the toy over the leg

Haha, they are little devils aren't they. I remember Daisy chewed everything. I had to use wood filler to fill all my door frames and bannister. Don't worry she will grow out of it.

For furniture buy some "Clove Oil" from Boots and rub it all over your woodwork, they hate it. It's a bit smelly but does the trick. Good Luck x

Been trying so hard this week and nothing seems to be working as yet she latched on to my partner this morning and took a while to let go. We told her no very firm tryed to get her intrested in her toys which she wasnt ,claped loud with a firm no, still no luck so give her 5 minutes in her cage. Taking her puppy classes next week hopefully they can also help x

Puppy classes will be great.  Misty was a terrible mouther when we got her at fourteen months. Honestly she was a nightmare with it. We tried the yelping but it didn't work for us. The only thing that worked was as said above, ignoring her, removing our arms and putting a chew bone in its place. We have a lot of the tasty bones ones as they smell and also we use a lot of stag bars and buffalo horns as they reek. That has worked for us, she very very rarely mouths now. You will get there!!

I have been having the same problem with our young Tess who is now 4 months old.In the first few weeks I had more holes in my hand than a second hand dart board,those first teeth are so sharp aren't they?She is now starting to lose some of those,at least the second ones wont be as sharp.Tess is a young bitch with loads of spirit,and at times will even try to answer back,I don't want to be too hard and try and break that because that is what makes the breed,my aim will be to just control it and use it at the right times.
To be honest over the past 30 years of owning,breeding and showing staffs this is the first time I have had a pup to bring up by its self.In the past we have always had another for a pup to run on with,and the senior would always take the brunt of the naughtiness and correct them when needed.But this time it's left to me alone to handle,but I love the challenge and they are so funny.

She is defo challenging ! Roxy spends nore time with my partner as he takes her to work,so tends to listen to him a little more. We are starting puppy classes next week so hopefully that will clam her and the biting down . X

my new puppy is crazy all he want to do is chew our toes, fingers, ankles , face niples, and so on lol hes barking also i think hes probably the worse staffy puppy i every had but when he gets daily walks he will calm down

Q. how was she breed?

in a outside kennels?
in house in an cage?
in the house in kitchen?

She was kept in a house, she slept in a cage at night. I cant wear my dressing gown or any decent clothes when shes really hyped up because u get holes in them haha... puppy classes wednesday for us hopefully this will help her. I know shes clever she has learnt sit, lie down and paw in the space of a few days she just doesnt get the no biting just yet haha.. we have only had her just over 2 week so i no it is still early days. I dont think she even k ows her name yet x

Sounds like all my previous staffs - it feels like the nipping will never stop! Evie is now 4 months and finally getting it but I still have to put my jeans on before I come downstairs each morning to save my legs as she's so excited to see me. They are a challenge but it's so rewarding when they get it

I really hope she gets it soon. Took her to her 1st puppy class last night she was fab with the other dogs, people and children, didnt go to bite anyone, then soon as she was home it was like a different dog she just kept biting and biting us, she latched onto my partner and made him draw blood. We have been putting her in her cage now for 2-3 mins as a punishment. Its been 4weeks and seen no improvement in the biting... i do relise shes a puppy but i feel like its never going to get better

It will get better, I know it doesn't feel like you're making progress, but one day you'll realise that you've not been bitten all day! And from then on they get better and better. I promise you they all go through it and grow up to be lovely, good natured dogs that would never hurt you on purpose.

I got into the habit of wearing slippers with toggles otherwise feet were fair game! She will still, if in a nostalgic mood, go for feet. And stuff that is not worn in over a week will be officially renamed "toys" she won't touch everyday used feet stuff haha

All i can advise is do not leave anything that you don't want to die on the floor! Also keep her entertained - the more she has to think about the less mischief she can get up to.

There is an American chap who has a ton of YouTube videos. Search training positive on you tube, click on the one that shows you how to stop puppy biting. Basically you need to train roxy to understand the word off! I followed the video and Bowie soon picked it up! He uses a clicker, so did we, but you don't have to if you prefer not too. Once she has learnt what off means things should start getting easier! Good luck!

We have started to use the OFF word works brilliant if i have a treat in my hand, she bites my hand and as soon as i say OFF she stops now, however when shes biting me when i have no treats avalable the word off seems to mean nothing to her haha

Yeah, keep working on it. Keep doing the offcommand, start increasing the time that you leave before rewarding her. Should be able to get to best part of a minute within a week or so.

Once she understands off, if she nips and bites at you or the furniture, keep forcefully saying off, and then put one of her toys into her chops! Stay patient, it will come!

got him a solid rubber ball and rubber ring got freedom of house last 5 weeks touch wood no damage at all

also burns dry food solid dog very well behaved with other dogs best way saves the hassle and poor dog getting a bad name

It sounds like you are having all the fun .

If you give her a treat once she stops biting you, despite what you say or do, she could think she is rewarded for biting you.  Also, your reaction to her biting could also be the reward she is after; have a few toys handy and when she bites you stay still, reach for a toy and go all out on excitement when she goes for the toy instead.  

If you have a crate, play with her with toys right next to the crate and when she gets you instead, put her in the crate for a couple of minutes, repeat a few times and she will soon learn.

Just to let you know that you're not suffering alone, despite my best efforts my other half had some input in my dogs' education. She taught one of my dogs to chew shoes by giving him treats when he dropped her shoe so the fool thought the way to get fed is to mess around with shoes. Also, whenever he barked she also asked him to be quiet and then treated him for it so now have a guess what he does when he wants a treat .

It was a combination of things that worked for us to reduce Phantoms nippiness.

He gets nippy for different reasons so:

Boredom : we redirect with a toy. If that doesn't work then he gets ignored, using body language helps, so folded arms, no eye contact, be unaffected. When he calmed down then we'd play a game with his toys and praise him.

Excitement with people: we told everyone, from house guests to people who pet him in the street that he is still in his puppy needle teeth phase and not to offer him fingers to chew. We keep a consistent no to any chewing on trousers, shoelaces, shoes, hair, scarves etc. Our family were a bit soft on him but we gave them full permission to say a loud no, clap loudly, push him away.

Play: he left his litter mates at 7.5 weeks and had a few weeks more of thinking that play was about mouthing and biting. I used the above techniques and occasionally, a big loud yelp or a pinch on the back of his neck.

Teething: best purchase we ever made was an antler for him to chew on.

Sometimes he will get nippy when he is hungry, needs to poop or tired. I try to keep him in a routine and often nippiness is a clue that he needs to be in his crate or to have his food. I used to get so downhearted that he was really nippy with me because it stressed me out. I had to up my volume and reinforce that I am not a litter mate even though I give cuddles and we play, he cannot nip me. I am his human not his sibling.

Some days it felt like constant nipping. After a while the biting has reduced massively, he barely does it anymore.

Our Bentley is 4 and a half months old now and was beginning to calm a little. He started puppy classes 2 weeks ago which are great. He gets on well with all of the other dogs and their owners and is learning really well. BUT since the first class he's been more hyper that ever and when he gets home he gets back into the biting and nipping. Listening to your comments has giving me hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Today he even pulled the curtain down when my back was turned for a few minutes. He's a great little character; very very playful and always excited to see you when you get up in the morning and come home in the evening.

It does get better Tony trust me. Patience and consistency are the keys.

Is it particularly after training class? If so, I wonder if it is in part some of the excitement of the class spilling over when you get home. Maybe take him a walk on your way back to see if that helps get it out of him.

Otherwise, as Ian says it does pass, eventually!
