Cross with myself
I took Chaos to the vet for his annual booster this afternoon, but sadly I managed to leave my brain at home.
From out in the carpark I could hear a dog making one heck of a racket inside. It turned out to be a King Charles who, apparently, always makes that noise. Chaos started reacting to it but I sat the other side of the waiting room and asked him to settle. He was very good and sat with his back to the dog, eating treats and not muttering a sound. He was, though, getting quite stressed - lots of panting and very worried looking. Could someone tell me why at that point I didn't take him out and ask that one of the nurses call us when the vet was ready for us???
As the spaniel walked past to the consulting room, I did lots of 'watch me' and it was clear to everyone except the spaniel's owners that I was working hard to keep Chaos calm. So why on earth did they allow their dog to come and and sniff him. Chaos, understandably, snapped and I got a filthy look. The staff were lovely and said how good he'd been otherwise.
Once that dog had gone he settled, lying quietly on the floor, even though there were two other dogs in there with us. I was very pleased with him but of course he still had the adrenalin pumping round his body and when we went in to see the vet he became super stressed again. The vet was lovely, gave him treats and cuddles, but he was trying to hide from her and reacted to the needle, something he's normally fine with. He did give her kisses afterwards, which was a relief.
What makes me cross with myself is that I shouldn't have put him in the position of having a bad vet visit. Idiot, idiot, idiot! We have a vet visit in France before we come back that will be just a chewable tablet, so fingers crossed that one goes better. I'll then take him in when I get back for some treats and cuddles, and hope there's no lasting damage done.
Honestly, Liz.

ach liz if u have other stuff going on common sense for me goes out the window stress can sometimes play a factor for me forgetting simple things all things considering chaos done well. imagine in a vet of all places letting your dog sniff another dog honestly. mias last visit there was a rather large collie it came practically came nose to nose with mia before she gave a deep throat growl, before this had asked if could shorten the extended lead we all make mistakes im sure he will bounce back

Awww, don't beat yourself up over it. These things happen, nobody gets it right all the time. I just couldn't find my puppy for about fifteen minutes and realised I had shut him in the shed with the guinea pigs lol. Bad doggy mum I am xx

Don't kick yourself Liz we all make mistakes Chaos did really well! Katy has had a reminder for her booster, usually I book her in then sit there for 10 mins after our booked time, dogs & cats all around her. We both get stressed, her worried about other dogs & me worried about her reacting to the other dogs Luckily they have two practices, one in Battle & the other in Robertsbridge. Both close to me but Robertsbridge is Very quiet but only open for 2hrs in the afternoon so I will try & grab an appointment there

I think most of us have had some sort of bad experience at the vets Liz. My Flo was always great until she had her knee op and ever since she has been nervous about being there.

Sounds like both you and Chaos handled the situation brilliantly given the circumstances Liz. Well done Chaos!

No Liz you're a great dog Mum, you didn't do anything wrong, look at it as a 'test & learn' for next time you need to take him, he did brilliantly by the sounds of things which is a credit to you, hang in there !

Re: Cross with myself
Thanks all. Yes, he was a very, very good boy and now I've stopped beating myself up so much I can concentrate on that. He is a big worrier by nature and that sort of situation is just so stressful for him, so that he held it together as well as he did was fantastic.
I do love my boy so much.

Re: Cross with myself
Lol git!!!
Don't beat yourself up Liz sounds like he handled it as well as he could good lad Chaos! It's so hard for them when they are worried little bunnies Axl is the same.
Talking of mistakes I made a major whoopie last night. I took Axl for his night wee but wasn't holding the lead properly, he saw a cat and took off like a bat out of hell and the lead slipped out of my hand obviously I had a mini panic attack he disappeared I thought I'd lost him. Eventually what felt like hours but was probably a few minutes I found him by a parked car looking very ashamed of himself! I was so relieved but lesson learnt keep hold of that lead tightly at all times!!

Sounds like he did really well Liz. I think we all beat ourselves up when something happens but you are fantastic with him and it goes to show no one is infallible and we can all sometimes not engage our brain!

Re: Cross with myself
Don't be cross LizP - silly people shouldn't come up to you without asking if its ok with your dog first and esp in a vet's where dogs are there usually when they're ill etc.,
