IBS
Axl's IBS is playing up again he was so poorly yesterday I had to take a day off work. He was pooing diarrhoea and blood. Took him to the vets and he was such a star he was wiggling at all the other dogs and owners not one growl I was so happy with him. The vet felt his tummy and he was groaning in my arms bless him he was in a lot of pain. The vet gave him a shot of pain killer and anti inflammatory and also antibiotics and I'm going to get him some natural yoghurt today. He's brighter today but I'm still worried. Feeding him chicken and rice and the vet said he should stay on it for 5 days but I'm a bit worried he's going to lose weight he's not exactly fat now I don't think he can afford to lose any!
He's insistent on skinting me out with vet bills it seems!!

Re: IBS
Poor bubby! He's fed on ND usually, right? And you haven't noticed a sensitivity to certain proteins? Remember you saying he gobbles stuff on the floor on walks too!
Grains can really upset some dogs digestive systems so I don't know why vets continue to suggest chicken and rice across the board. Personally, I go for boiled chicken and mashed sweet potato for an upset tummy and bone broth to drink. It keeps up the vitamins and minerals and is gentle on the tummy. The bone broth will hopefully stop him from getting dehydrated too. Eggs can be good too if he can tolerate them, just scrambled and plain.
I also used this a lot in kennels, if you haven't seen it before. It works wonders and has great reviews from others too.

Re: IBS
Hi Rachel
Yeah he's fed in ND funny enough I gave him chicken and turkey and it started that night he doesn't usually have turkey it might be that?
I will get some sweet potato then and try that with boiled chicken instead. I didn't know that rice could be bad!!
Just because I'm a numpty lol but how do I make bone broth? Do I buy chicken on the bone and separate the bones and boil them? I haven't made that before.
He can tolerate eggs so that's another option.
I will check that link out as well thanks so much Rach x

Re: IBS
I could well be, but the bloody stools seem a little extreme. Is it streaks of blood or more? It depends on the dog r.e grains, Bug for example can tolerate it without causing digestive problems but it flares up her skin. There is only a small amount in ND but the amount you would be feeding on a chicken/rice diet may cause more problems.
You're not a numpty lol! Do you have a slow cooker? It's much easier that way. You can use marrow bones, necks, chicken frames etc. If you've got a morrisons near you they usually have bones in their butchers section for cheap. It does take a while, about a day in the slow cooker but it'll definitely aid his recovery. Here's a link:

Re: IBS
My sister in law has IBS and it's dairy that sets her off. If she has a little bit of milk in something for a few days in a row then she gets seriously sick. It's like whatever sets her off needs to build up before it makes her ill. Maybe it's the same for Axl? hope that helps.
