I was just about to post this! Barbaric. It's Devon and Cornwall police too, there's outrage here at the moment.

Oh my God this is horrendous. I've just burst into tears reading this. That poor dog, this is animal cruelty.I wouldn't be surprised if the poor thing was dangerous now, two years locked up in a cage who could blame them. This is wrong on so many levels, thankfully it had now been brought to the public's attention maybe something will happen. Absolutely heartbreaking.

I thought that would be your neck of the woods, Rach. I bet the local press is full of it, and outrage is what there should be. It's shameful, and a gross misinterpretation of the law.

Absolutely disgraceful. Who on earth could ever consider this to be reasonable treatment of an animal, any animal. The people behind this should a) be sacked for stupidity b) completely ashamed of themselves

Re: 'Pit bull type' kept locked up for 2 years by police
I too am very shocked that this has been allowed. They claim the owner is not fit for the dog, yet that same owner has appeared at ELEVEN court dates. Not missed one. Most people who were not fit to have a dog would NOT make that effort.
The BSL law is the biggest pile or horse * i have ever came across. I could breed a "pit type" out of umpteen non-bull breed dogs, and not a one will be any more dangerous than a real pit bull.
Whilst i believe breeds do have traits, cause thats why they were bred, at the end of the day its the type of owner they get that dictates the dogs actions. One of the most dangerous dogs i know of is a german shepherd, yet the police use them.
