Hi all
Hello everyone. Just want to start off by saying that this is an awesome forum and I look forward to becoming a bit more of a regular poster. I recently bought my seal/hippo/piranha shark and he's been hilarious thus far. Training is coming along great, gets on very well with other dogs; puppy classes helps. Couldn't ask for much more really, well, except one minor thing that I am concerned about. He has had this odd leg thing since being a pup, can't tell if it is genetics or something he has developed. I took him to the vet the other day and they said come back in two weeks time. They said for him to lose some weight as he is 10.6kg at 18 weeks old; breeder just told me to feed feed feed. Anyway, his hind legs, when he walks (and runs) go upwards into his belly; imagine how you position your feet if you sit down on the floor and one foot is under your bum; that's kind of how he walks with each step, if that makes sense. I can't tell if this is something he will grow out of (flexible young pup), perhaps his legs will gain more muscle and the joint will stiffen up, perhaps he is just a bit odd or the worse, hip dysplasia. Anyway, sorry for the odd introduction but I would love your opinions, perhaps your staffies had odd walking issues?

Re: Hi all
I see what you mean. It looks more like the stifle to me than the hip.
re the weight, i don't think his weight would be causing this issue. Don't feed feed feed too much though, he could get a bit too big.

Re: Hi all
Hi & Welcome to the Forum from Flo and me
Watching the clip clearly shows he doesn't have a correct walk but I can't really see why. Hopefully he'll grow out of it as I can't really see any reason why he should be like that, mind you I'm not a vet and perhaps if it doesn't improve then an X-ray will be the way to go.
Do keep us up to date though.

Hi and a warm welcome to the forum
I can see what you mean with his walking. Sorry, I can't offer any advice but hope the vet comes up with something. Hopefully he will grow out of it. He's absolutely gorgeous though

Re: Hi all
Hi from me & Katy, lovely little pup From the video its definitely a strange walk, looks to me like maybe something out of line as the knee looks like its going outwards. I would suggest a vets opinion & let us know how you get on

Re: Hi all
Thank you all for your input. He is going back to the vets in two weeks time so will have to see what they say. I will keep you all posted on the outcome and hopefully it's nothing too serious

Re: Hi all
Hi from me and mine too
Although he does have an issue with that leg (or both back legs?) he might not be uncomfortable if it's a structural thing, just odd. Re the weight, yes, he could do with loosing a little and, although weight might not cause the issue, it will be putting extra strain on his joints so it's best to slim him down a little.
I hope you get to the bottom of it.

Re: Hi all
Yeah, I think that it may just be structural and he grows out of it . The breeder said to have him on eggs, chicken, tripe and kibble. But I was feeding him mostly chicken and kibble in a 50/50 ratio; thinking that perhaps there wasn't enough calcium? Although I feel that the Canin kibble I gave him with each meal would have had sufficient calcium. I was also looking at old videos of him earlier and I remember now that he has in fact, always had this walk since I had him, I remember thinking that he just didn't like the cold grass in my garden or anywhere for that matter and so, would put each foot on and off the ground as quickly as possible. Just a waiting game now until two weeks time

Re: Hi all
Well, he had his X-ray today due to me wanting to get him in earlier. Was pretty devastating saying goodbye to him for the day, but after about two seconds of being with the vets he pretty much forgot about me and jumped into their arms . The out come of the X-ray saw that there are no issues with his hips, spine, legs or anything. Growth plates are all fine, nothing out of place anywhere. They put it down to either lack of muscle in the legs and still being a pup supplemented with the fact that he probably won't be the straightest pencil in the box. As long as he is not in any pain (which he isn't) then I don't mind if he is a bit of a pleb, just means he takes after me
