Hello
Hi
My wife and I decided to get a dog 9 months ago now from the Dogs Trust, we went in open minded and came home with Grace. Grace is a six year old black staffy who has been in and out of homes and the dogs trust for various reasons. She is such a lovely dog who likes to sleep and cuddle up on the sofa, we are still getting used to her and her quirks (which she has many).
I was hoping that some people here would be able to help with a couple of things, the first is that she no longer goes for a walk, it is an achievement to get her to the end of the drive. We play with her outside on the drive and back garden and she is happy and are hoping to build this up to walking short distances. If any one has some more advice or information that could help that would be great.
The second is we need some more games to play with her to keep her and her mind active whilst she isn't walking. She loves her Kong toys and playing rope, and has got really quick at hide and seek. Most of the normal puzzle games she just destroys in seconds and is really pleased with herself, so again if anyone has any ideas or suggestions we would be most grateful.
Thanks
Mike

Re: Hello
Hi ya Mike, welcome to the forum from Flo and me
Well done on the rescue
I'm assuming that the fantastic looking Grace gets to the end of the drive and then becomes a rock and refuses to move and finally sitting down followed by the lay down and ignore!
You are not alone Staffies can be stubborn things and I've had this... A lot. Once my girl is at the park, she loves it and has so much fun but getting her there has been problematic. My girl is happy to get in the car and go somewhere so that might be an option just to get her somewhere.
I wouldn't recommend my next suggestion until Grace has really settled in and got to know you but I've resolved this by A) picking her up and carrying her till she realises we are going B) telling her with a firm (voice) gesture that we are going, resorting to option A as a last resort.
Hopefully others will be able to offer more advice. As for the toys/games, sounds like you already do all that I do !

Re: Hello
Hi Mike welcome from me and Misty. Congrats on the rescue, Grace looks absolutely gorgeous
I can't really offer any advice re therefusal to walk as Misty is the opposite, dragging us down the road! To keep her entertained at home I give her a stag bar which she loves. She also goes mad for her boomer ball but this is definitely an outdoor toy only! I also blend up some strawberries or blueberries and put them in her Kong and freeze it. She has Buffalo horn to chew which I also freeze with some fruit in for her.
Also treaching Grace some new tricks will be great for some mental stimulation.
Have fun and welcome to the wonderfulworld of Staffs:-bd

Re: Hello
Hi from Una and me! Yes Una's the same when it's dark, sometimes I can distract her with some kibble on the ground and a "go find it" game, other times I call it a win if we manage a few feet from the house.
As Ian mentioned, the car is good and we find that Una is associating it with woodland walks and lots of sniffing after mice, so she's much less likely to plant her paws down.
On games, I got some excellent suggestions from this thread as I was really struggling in the afternoons: https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/t64414-basic-question-on-timing-of-play-and-training and LizP talked about a babble ball in another thread which sounds like it could be good fun.

Re: Hello
Gorgeousness! Gizmo turned to stone when he was a puppy and I decided to carry a jar of peanut butter with me, walking along waving it at him so he'd follow. It kind of worked, except he was seriously focussed on the peanut butter to the point where he'd walk on his hind legs...

Re: Hello
hi mike staffies are stubborn in the rain I have to shove mias bum out the door. I would use high value treats with your dog even if you have to act silly and use a silly voice a little walk each time and getting her further each time is key you could perhaps use a favourite toy as she will associate the walks as positive . id get a long line too so she isnt feeling forced to go out even pretending to walk away and leaving her may worl as she will feel the need to follow you little steps at a time is important as too much at once may stress her out. well done on the rescue and welcome from me and mia

Re: Hello
Hi and welcome to the forum from me and the zoo xx
Get her a boomer ball it's the best thing EVER! My Knox used to play with his for hours and hours until he was too tired to play any more. They are indestructible balls that they use for tigers in the zoo. Obviously you don't need one that big but you get one big enough so that it doesn't quite fit into the dogs mouth and they will just run around for hours after it
Watch out for your shins though, if you do get one, as it hurts like heck!
Good Luck xxx
