is it true that dogs know when someone is ill. My grandson was rushed into hospital last Monday and is very ill now Dexter used to lay on his mums tummy while she was pregnant with him all the way until she had him the bond between Dexter and Izack my grandson is something g else. Ever since last Monday Dexter is only eating a few bits won't settle in his cage or on my bed keeps laying at the front door. Now we brought Izack home yesterday but still has tubes in and when Dexter seen him only for 5 mins wouldn't let anyone not even his mum or me near him even growled at me when I was trying to give Izack a drink and trying to get him out the house to go home Dexter was running at my front door head butting it going mad. Is this just to over protective or what.

dogs do sense when someone is ill keeping him occupied with toys will help never heard of them trying to headbutt the door to get out. hope someone else will be along with better advice. I know when my niece and nephew were tiny they both stayed the night at my house mia never slept and any noise she growled staffies in general adore kids this may be a phase that passes hopefully. hope izack gets better soon.

They are so sensitive, aren't they?

It's only over protective if you think it's too much. Just make sure you respond to any growls with clarity and sensitivity, letting Dexter know that other can approach while he is there, and you should be fine.

'Get well soon' wishes for Izack. You must all be so worried.

When my dad had cancer of the stomach a couple of years ago when ever he came round Sasha would lay on his tummy,it was only months after i read how dogs can tell when some one has cancer,so yes i strongly believe they do.

Thank you everyone. Izack is doing loads better came over yesterday and Dexter wasn't as bad but still never left his side. It's like these two are joined at the hip.

Glad to hear he is on the mend. I definitely believe they sense illness, when my hubby has low blood sugars (he has diabetes) Misty starts pestering him.

They aren't called the Nanny Dog for nothing!
