play time inside Vs outside
Ok here is my very first question, i dont think I saw that topic here already, but sorry if it was.
Alright, so Manny is almost 4months, I got him since he was 10weeks. He is well used to my flat and the area where i live. Inside my appartment he really goes crazy playing fetch, he understand the game very well and brings back everything i would throw.
However everytime I take hime outside to play the game with the same ball/toy, he shows absolutely no interest, even without distractions he would just sit and look at me but no interest in the toy rolling away.
I really wonder why? And how to make him wanting to play. It is mostly to make him use all this energy somewhere else than in my appartement aha
I take him very frequently outside, around 5 times a day for 10min, he enjoys going out (if it is not raining) and seems at ease in the area where I want to let him play.
So if anyone has some advice, thanks in advance

Re: play time inside Vs outside
Hmmm... Not an easy one to solve unless you get a toy just for outside. My girl is the complete opposite and will play with her Stix all day he time outside but won't touch it indoors.
I think you need to experiment and when you've found something keep it exclusively for outside play.

Re: play time inside Vs outside
I'd try reserving a specially favoured toy for outside only, and instead of trying to get him to play with it, try playing hard to get. Don't make it too hard, you don't want to discourage him, but maybe see if you can get him running round you chasing it, a bit like you'd do with a cat if you see what I mean (the cat chasing the toy, not the dog chasing a cat!!!).
The other thing you could try is running with him, getting him to chase you, and so build in the idea of fun games being for outside as well as inside. Most dogs are usually really up for running with their owner.
I'd also reduce the amount of play inside for the time being, and see if that makes him more hungry for a game outside.

Re: play time inside Vs outside
Try playing with Mav with his ball in the house first to get him interested, then opening a door and throwing the ball out but only a little way. You should then be able to build up to throwing it while you are standing outside, etc. I personally don't encourage dogs to play with/chew sticks as little bits can get stuck at various places between entrance and exit, and can lead to blockages and emergency surgery.
I'd then suggest teaching 'leave it'. Easily done, just give him something to hold, then stick a smelly treat under his nose while saying 'leave it'. Repeat that a few times and he'll get the message. You can then build up to having the treat but not sticking it under his nose first, to being able to ask him to leave random things he picks up at various times, to dropping anything you ask for anywhere. Always treat to start off with.
