This is a particularly nasty disease. There have been a cluster of cases around the New Forest area with one of the local vets becoming somewhat an "expert".

They have no idea what causes it either Sad

I guess the reason they're saying to wash off your dogs when you come back from a walk in the woods is, even if it doesn't actually help stop infection, it does mean you're checking their legs over.
