snoozing with puppy
my little Spudleybug has taken to clambering on me for a snooze, or when i need to calm him down, i'll pick him up for cuddle, where he'll usually fall asleep..The last couple of days i've had him on the sofa with me, and we've both had a cuddle and a kip...Yesterday we tapped out for over an hour!!
In fact, he's asleep on me now...I love having this quiet time with him, but do you think it may make him clingy??
I put him in the kitchen today and went out for a couple of hours. When i came home he was in his crate (door open) and was fine...He'd done a little wee on the kitchen floor, but i just took him into the garden, and praised him when he eventually went...
As a side issue, i think im going to give up on puppy pads...he just rags them all over the kitchen!!
Here is AT THIS VERY MOMENT....
Any thoughts about the snoozing, clingy thing??

Re: snoozing with puppy
I think you're doing exactly the right thing by leaving him for periods of time. It's good to hear that he was in his crate quiet happy so carry on with that and the cuddles will be fine. Staffies are very people orientated so I would expect him to want to be close. Remember though, any behaviour that you encourage now (like sleeping on the bed) will have a big impact when he's full size
As for the pads, I know loads of people simply don't use them for that exact reason, it could even be argued that it will make toilet training longer.

Re: snoozing with puppy
Christ the amount of pads Marley went through was ridiculous!! I got rid of them and Marley just started going outside unless it's raining.... Where he will hold it all bloody day till the rain stops had to pick him up from under my table today to take him for a walk lil cow was hiding because of the rain like mental! I don't really know much about being clingy I let Marley sleep in my bed for the first week I had him then moved him to his crate and he was fine, and I started to increase the time I'd leave him and he was also fine I think your doing great and I love the sleepy puppy pic

Re: snoozing with puppy
sleepy pup i used newspaper with my pup one reason she went outside at 9 weeks was she hated the dripping noise on the newspaper. as your pup is very young he may see you as a littermate, he will also hea your heart beat and that will put him to sleep before hes much older perhaps a bed near you may be best if you dnt think he would benefit from being on your lap having him on his own bed will make him less needy too . may be a good idea

Katy shredded the puppy pads too I think they are a waste of time as our babies soon learn to go outside As for snuggles they love it as much as we do & I don't think it makes them clingy

Oh look at him, he's out cold, sooo gorgoeus! They love the cuddles, dont ever stop! You're doing the right thing by leaving him for periods tho, otherwise you will have problems later when you need to. I didnt use puppy pads, put down 3 and all eaten He just got put outside regularly and lots of praise when he went, very few incidents inside thankfully but do think we were lucky!

Re: snoozing with puppy
thanks for the feedback everyone...he's asleep on me again (although it was TOTALLY my fault because he looked so scrumptious)..
He has been starting to get the drift of toileting outdoors..We've only had two wee wee incidents today and i sprinted for the door...No poos (yay!!)
I've also been keeping on and on and on with 'Leave it'..when we play tug he's getting really good at letting go, and has even really calmed down on the play biting..In actual fact i got him to totally leave the mop alone when i was cleaning the floor..It took about 15 minutes but eventually he just laid down in his crate!!!
Also i've been teaching him to lay down using bits of chicken, then ultimately back to tug (where we go back to leave it)...I gave him a time out because he wouldnt leave a rug alone..its got a fringed edge so its a bit like a toy rope..
I mentioned in a previous thread that my eyes have been quite sore since i got Spudleybug..I do suffer from dry eyes but theyve been redder and more sensitive than usual and were very puffy this morning..Ive started taking anti allergy tablets and am praying that it passes..
Sometimes when im run down my eyes play up, so hopefully its that and im not allergic to little man, because even though he's been driving me mad at times, i ABSOLUTELY adore him...Thinking about losing him has me on the verge of tears...
Anyway, he has been brilliant when left alone, and i leave him in the kitchen for an hour or so when im in the house or outside in the garage etc. Ive also left him alone for a couple of hours today and he was snoozing when i came home..no wees no poos!!
Im gradually extending the alone time because i start back to work in a week...
I can't tell you how much i'm falling in love with my Spikeyspudster!

Aww I can see why you love him, how could you not, that beautiful face of his! I really really hope your eyes settle down with the tablets and its not the little one causing it. Ive never had a real puppy, only a year and a half dog who acts like a puppy but I can imagine it must be so tiring so hopefully (and I mean this in the nicest way possible) you are just run down a bit. Fingers crossed x

Re: snoozing with puppy
He's a cuddly boy, just wait until he's an adult and he's still trying to lay across your chest when you're sitting on the couch.
I wouldn't fuss about the allergies, everybody has some allergy or other. I was allergic to Bo for about a year and then it mostly petered out as he got older. When he was a puppy, if he touched my bare arms I'd come out in loads of red, itchy blotches. It didn't stop me hugging him all the time.
BTW - if you have dry eyes, try Galpharm Moisturising Eye Drops. They're really cheap (about £6 for three) and I find them much better than the other brands anyway. I have an eye condition for which I take medication that dries my eyes, so I have to put drops in regularly. In addition, many of the other brands have a dangerous additive I forget the name of, but Galpharm doesn't.

Re: snoozing with puppy
i already use the Galpharm drops. Ive been using them for years, but they haven't made much difference. the condition ive got is called meibomianitis, which basically means that the meibomian glands swell up and stop producing oil, which means my eyes get very itchy and my vision goes blurry....ive already tried more viscous products, but im keeping my fingers tightly crossed...
Ive built a 'containment area' around his crate, and this morning he only did one little poo and a small puddle...We had a big fussy, cuddly 'good morning', then i let him out and he went straight to the toilet!!
Im so chuffed..okay..so he's going to having a couple of wee wees in the house today...thats guaranteed, but it seems like the toilet thing is gradually sinking in....
