Misbehaving 6 month staffy!!! Empty Misbehaving 6 month staffy!!!

Post by Kahlon Wed Aug 12 2015, 07:27

Recently our 6 month old staffy has been a little terror. When we first adopted him at 3 months he was a bit nippy however that behaviour was soon curbed. He has graduated from puppy obidience classes and is socialized with humans and all types of animals! Lately he has been misbehaving on walks and tries his very best to just bolt away. He has a huge yard to run around in and gets plenty of toys to run around with however we still like to walk him. He has also been very " protective " of certain things and will nip if the item is trying to be taken away from him. Any advice will be very much appreciated! Thank you!

Hi there hold the item in one hand a treat in the other then take the item away if he goes to nip very firmly say no wait a few mins and repeat the process until he doesnt nip thats when u give him the treat. Do this exercise every , So often till the dog gets the idea. If you do this now the problem will be resolved when the dogs very much older its harder to get them out of bad habits at a certain stage. Smile

Hi & Welcome to the Forum from Flo and me Big Grin

So as you say your little un is still young, everything is a game and exciting. Use a long lead to get that recall training going. Recall training is perhaps the best thing you can teach your young one as this will prevent any bad situations going forward. Being able to call a dog, any dog, away from something is the one thing any owner should be able to do.

With regard to the toys, as far as he sees it they are his and they are toys... He's thinking "Go on take it away if you can".. All play. As suggested above, reward dropping and leave with high value treats. Be consistent and you'll get there Smile
