Help with chewing
My 12 month female staffy cross has been chewing, only random items my hairbrush, sons glasses (only the rubber ear piece) and toliet paper. I've purchased lots of chewy toys and raw hide rings but still shed rather chew random things. She seems to spit them out. I was informed she was kept in a crate by her first owner, but I'm not sure I want to go down this route. I have a three year old male who is very good when we are not in. They are only alone for about 4 hours a day whilst my partner is on dialysis. This won't be for much longer as he will soon be doing his treatment at home and I will be home when he doing this I.m doing his treatment. My ex who I had two staffies with says I should put her in a crate whilst out as he believes she has anxiety issues. He currently has a boxer and a staff and his staffy is in a crate during the day because he's a chewer too. Any advise would is appreciated. I.ve never had a dog who chewed before. Please note I've only had Roxy a week. Thanks in advance ☺

Remove as much temptation as you can, if she can't get at it then alls good. As suggested, try the toys like the Kong and put something tasty in it to keep her amused. Hopefully she'll learn quick enough. I wouldn't use the crate unless you really have to

Re: Help with chewing
Thanks for the replies. I will try the kong. I.m doing my best to keep things out of reach. It's training my son and hubby to put stuff away that's a real challenge.

Tell me about it... My OH & Eldest are terrible, strangely my youngest is good as gold at removing things

Re: Help with chewing
Please don't go down the crate route. While I'm not opposed to crates per se, I am opposed to crates for sustained periods like this.
I'm reading a book on dogs - their senses and their psychology - at the moment and it's given me one thought. Very often dogs like to chew things that smell of us - shoes, clothing, and yes, Millie's had 2 pairs of my glasses, the ear bits. Instead of fighting it, I wonder if it's not worthwhile making something permissible smell of us and so directing the need to chew and smell us at something specific. It might then take away the need to find something random.
I don't know if it'll work, it's not something I've tried yet, but it makes sense and I will give it a go myself.

Re: Help with chewing
I left Roxy and Tyler alone for about two hours this morning as I had to take my oh to hospital. Nothing was chewed, no accidents either. I did walk them for about 45 minutes before I left and then gave her some food she curled up in her bed and I'm guessing stayed their, satisfied by a walk and some food in her belly. I think burning some of her energy meant she didn't get bored. It was a break through imo.
I'm going to keep trying this. But tweak it to suit our week day routines. I am starting to think she may need more food than my male too. She's a staffy x bull mastiff so may get a lot bigger. I've also told my son he needed to do a house check before we left. Then randomly placed toys around the house.
Think I.ll try the scent idea Liz. Might get her a new toy and stick it in my sons room while he's away for the weekend. But I will do anything I can before trying a crate. My first two staffs had a crate but that was down to my ex I have never liked them grew up with dogs and never had to crate them.

Re: Help with chewing
Exercising her before you leave will help. She also was likely still getting use d to the new home. We had some good success with Bitter Apple when Suki was chewing

Re: Help with chewing
Thank you to everyone for suggestions. The Kong's are working a treat. We have a few days of no accidents and no chewing. I.ve purchased so many toys, I think a mix of that and simply settling in has done the trick. Very happy with Roxys progress.
