Ok - a little advice needed - when Buddy starts running round the house, garden and conservatory like a dog possessed what is the best way to calm him down?

This morning he decided he was going to launch himself off the sofa at high speed ran into the conservatory upturned the coffee table, lamp and jumped all over the chairs then off into the garden with the cushions from the chair.. back into the conservatory dragged the carpet into the garden . then his poo bags which were in a draw which he managed to get open ! and ripped them to bits then he tried to drag the wine rack into the garden - all at 5.30am .. too early for this...

I cannot catch him and do not have a room to try and do time out as my house is open planned and when he is on a chair and I try and reach out to him he snaps to bite me - not aggressively but hard enough to draw blood if he caught me he just gets over excited ears flat , eyes wide... - I know he will have these moments - I had a greyhound who used to do it too, so its not new to me, but the greyhound would lay on the floor after a bit and you could calm him by talking , Buddy just gets into more of a frenzy if you try to approach him, I just want to know how to calm him down as I am scared he will hurt himself , I shut him in the garden today and then put him
in his crate with his Kong but it took a long while before he would let me handle him

Any advice he is only 10kgs at the minute when fully grown I will have no house left Laughing

We have an open plan as well and a tiny house. Suki mostly outgrew the phase but still does it a few times a month. We basically just keep things out of her way and watch the show.

Haha sorry this made me laugh too Laughing can imagine him dragging things out side lol, Marley has these episodes too but not that nuts haha, I usually just get out of the way and let him do it till he's had enough, maybe put things out of the way so he can't drag anything or throw him his fave toys might distract him abit. Marley tends to do his fast run at night time when we are all chilling on the settee it's like he's thinking look at me look at me

he is 18 weeks now I have tried throwing toys to him , he is running so fast he just doesn't even see them- he just runs up the furniture and you if your sitting on it!! this morning I put his toy crate on the chair to stop him getting on it - and then saw him jump clean on the toy box on the chair to get to the carpet I had just rescued. He is just a nut job.. his latest trick is to walk round with his cushion from his bed in his mouth for no particular reason other than he can !! - I think I am going to have some fun with this one !

Hey! It does sound quite normal but just to be sure - what are you feeding him? And what exercise is he getting each day?

Laughing try and limit the dogs access by blocking the other rooms off have you also tried to distract the dog with a toy? After his zoomies for 2 minutes call him to you with the toy in your hand and wave the toy around to attract his attention once you have his attention get him to sit then give him the toy say firmly to him nice if he snatches it take it away wait a few seconds give him it back . If he snatches repeat the process . As soon as he takes it nice give him plenty of excited good boys i used a rope toy for this a large one Smile

hi - he gets walked three times a day half hour each time - morning and evening on a long line so he can run around a bit - I am feeding him on Wainrights dry puppy food sometimes with a bit of chicken or tuna added to spice it up a bit - I did think about a reaction to food as we gave him some treats a few weeks ago and he was a terrible for a couple of hours, so now I only give dried tripe or natural treats from Millies wolfheart ,I think he just likes to let off steam and gets over excited, when he is zooming he is almost trance like, if you get in the way he mows you down... I cant block any areas off as I have no inner walls to use my downstairs is one big square room ...I think I will just have to try and guide him into the garden when he starts ( rescuing the cat first ) and try distracting him with a treat , I am sure he will get better as he gets older ( I hope) Rolling Eyes

I know I shouldn't but I just had to laugh Laughing

Zoomies will always be a Staffy trait but you'll need to try and find something to distract him so that he snaps out of it as mentioned above, maybe some high value treats.

I did have to laugh when I read Jstaffs reply about watching the show too Laughing

I must admit I had to laugh too Laughing Katy is nearly 4 stone & still has the occasional zoomies, usually when she's been out in the rain. When she gets going we keep well out of the way Laughing

It sounds like you're doing everything perfectly - and it does sound like behaviour that all of ours do from time to time. I would work on training a "stop" or "enough" command, which basically means "stop whatever you are currently doing." I mostly use it in play, but occasionally Bug will have crazy zoomies where she will try and grab you with excitement and a firm "enough" will stop her in her tracks, no matter how exciting it is. She will then get LOADS of low key praise and attention, as not to hype her up again!

My Spudleybug has a mad one several times a day..Typical staff pup behaviour i think. Usually in the garden he'll run round like a maniac...maybe stop for a quick poo (praise and treat), then zooming like a nutter again...When we're in the living room he usually has another zoom, trying to jump on the furniture, or failing that, tugging the throw from the sofa..It does make me laugh....the ears back etc...also when he leaves the rug and hits the wooden floor as he's turning..this usually means him landing on his 'arris!!
Today the little git climbed the stairs!! He's not even 9 weeks old!! He sprinted up the first few...had a think, a whine then ran up a few more....he even negotiated the two turns in the stairs!....
I wasn't quite so impressed though when he reached the landing and did a wee....
Spudley zoomies now = puppy weeing later....

It's sort of amusing now...but it won't be in a few weeks when stuff starts flying..

its getting him outside that is the issue I have French doors and a conservatory he has to pass through - I have to run and open the doors when he starts or I will have a staffy shaped hole in the glass ! - I ma sure he will calm down a bit as he gets older - and if not we will haveto live with it Buddy's here to stay so....
