When summer meets swag. Two dogs issues
Hi All!
It has been a while since i posted here. Not since 2 years ago when I adopted swag and he had some aggressive play biting issue.
Swag has matured a little bit now that he is 3 yrs old. He has been very good and almost problem free.
the one thing that I could not train out of him is his rough play with other dogs. he gets really excited when he sees another dog and always wants to play.
I think this is a typical staffy play though. the nipping in the face and the jumping on top of the other dog.
This leads me to my topic.
Enter Summer our newly adopted staffy.
Pound said she was 10 weeks...it was more 4 months old.
She is very lovely, submissive and playful.
Loves cuddles and hugs and it seems to motivate her as suppose to food (unlike swag)
Ive had her for 2 weeks now. the first week and half she was staying at my parents place as she recovers from the operation (splayed).
Last saturday I introduce summer to swag in a park that me and swag havent walked before. I was able to walk them together with minimal distraction. swag tried a number of times to jump on top of her.
They got to the back yard and as soon as I released Swag they started playing.
running around and chasing each other.
Swag being swag played rough, and summer being a puppy matched his excitement. AWESOME they get a long.
Until the first of a few problems or possible problems began to happen
This leads me to my call for guidance and help as I have never had two dogs before
first thing:
1 Swag always licks, or play chew summers ear.
He seems to have a thing for ears as he did it with our other staffy friend.
but with summer he just keeps going for it!
2. Once he gets started on the ear, he will them proceed to try and mount and hump her.
---> really need some insight here as to whether i should stop him. HOW i should stop him etc.
this leads to the next one.
3. Summer growls and nips back when she gets annoyed. The problem is Swag doesnt understand the word "growl". he just keep coming at it.
This is now link to the forth one
4. Summer being a puppy instigates and initiates the play as well but easily escalates to her growling while play bitting swag.
Now I think it is just puppy play in a high excitement agro level. And since Swag doesnt growl back even with Summer's sharp teeth and No blood has been drawn with either leads me to believe that it is just play.
They can go at it for hours without stoppin.
I had to separate them last night at 2am since she was soo loud.
My main worry is that it is reinforcing summer to
1. Growl all the time (and sometimes bark. Swag never barks and I like it that way)
2. Play rough all the time.
3. escalates to a point that swag actually does something agro to her.
The above are my primary concern and one that I want to address ASAP.
Any insight or advice would be lovely!
Ill post some photos and videos of them playing soon (when I figure it out)
thanks in advance
cheers
Ryan
PS: Sorry for the long post

Re: When summer meets swag. Two dogs issues
I posted very similar when I brought Miley (13 weeks) home. Her and casper (15 months) were very rough and tumble from day one. She has drawn blood from him several times. She is the one who growls, he has yet to growl at her, she will hang from his ears and he just rolls until she lets go because he's squashed her. And they too will do this for hours, even when both are panting. They make me laugh because they appear to call a brief truce while they both take a drink, then when both have left the bowl they go back to their play fight. I now leave them to it unless it's clear one of them has had enough and the other won't let him/her lie down in peace. I live in hope that one day they will just curl up nicely together but I'm not holding my breath for it to happen anytime soon.i guess that we have to trust in two things, 1-they will let the other know when they've really had enough 2- that we know our dogs well enough to judge when we need to intervene.

Re: When summer meets swag. Two dogs issues
We have a similar kind of thing happen when we visit my parents and Bane gets to play with their staff Domino.
They will go for hours if we left them and it will always be Domino getting fed up first and then Bane becoming annoying. Domino will growl and tell him that he's had enough, but Bane doesn't seem to understand so will start to snap and bark to try and entice Domino to chase him.
At this point, we just intervene. One of us will walk over say "enough" in a loudish voice and then separate them to different rooms. Once calm, they are allowed to be back together. It takes a few times for Bane to understand but he usually gets it after 2 or 3 times and then just goes off doing his own thing.
I think they just need a little guidance and will soon settle if you put some boundaries in place.
As for the ear licking and then humping. I notice Bane does this. It's usually once Domino is fed up and Bane will sneak up to him for a sniff, lick his chops or ears a bit and then you can just see it in his face and body language he is trying to find a way to mount him. Never is successful though. Maybe something to discourage as it could cause fights as she gets older?
