Car safety
I have a problem taking casper in the car. He has worked out he can unclip the belt if he stands on it. I have a Zafira so can't put him in the boot with one of those rail things across to stop him getting in to the seats, and he isn't 1 to just sit nicely. Is there anything I can buy to keep him restrained?

Re: Car safety
Oh that's an awkward one. I have seen what looks like a large fabric crate that sits on the back seat but wouldn't know where to get one or what it's called even.

Re: Car safety
I had a fabric crate indoors for him.. It looked like wolverine had been in it within an hour plus if I have all 5 kids with me there's only 1 seat for casper so a crate would be too big for that one seat.

Re: Car safety
b&m sell a dog car seat cover with straps that clip over the rear and front head-rests to create a sort of hammock over the rear seats. this means that your dog can't fall or crawl into the rear footwells and they also have a velcro covered slit in them to allow you to clip them in and then close the velcro.
they are £4.99 i think but the straps soon fray from the cover so we stitched extra webbing to the straps and that seems to have made them stronger.

Re: Car safety
Misty is exactly the same. She just wants to jump on the driver and give them kisses. Nightmare! I don't want to put her in the boot because I worry if ever we are hit up the back she will be hurt. This weekend I bought a car hammock from pets at home. This thing is fantastic, I don't know why it works but it does. You basically attach it to the front and back seats and it means they can't fall down into the foot well. We went for a drive Sunday to my parents and she just sat in the back by herself (normally i sit with her) but she was fine. She tried to come into the front at the beginning but i just held my arm up and she settled so well in the back. I really don't know why this hammock worked so well but it does. Only twenty four pounds and it had twenty per cent off too. It's an amazing thing!

Re: Car safety
I wouldn't mind if he sat in the footwell as long as he was still lol. I've googled images of these hammock things and it looks like they cover more than one seat?

Re: Car safety
my dad got a grate for the bit between the boot and the backseat. It stops Gizmo from leaping up to lick the front passengers, but he falls over a lot and I really think he's going to hurt himself on a speedbump or a sharp turn.
i miss him being small enough to stick on my lap and hold still.

Re: Car safety
Yes the hammock covers all the back seats but the pah one is good because you can unzip one side so you can have a human passenger in the back too.

Re: Car safety
Alot of people I know transport dogs in crates at the rear of vans and cars. Im the same as you re being shunted up the back but I guess there is a greater risk of slamming the brakes on and the dog being launched into the front. you can get harnesses that will clip into the seat belts on the rear seats. there is also this neat contraption that i quite like the idea of http://www.petspyjamas.com/product/kurgo-auto-zip-line-leash-combo/ACP-00223/?gclid=CjwKEAjws5CrBRD8ze702_2dyjYSJAAAJK9yks9T4qhkuen5Qtsg4a4UwG0E3PsP7ohxSKEtk6dJyhoCLRPw_wcB

Re: Car safety
thanks for the ideas guys. I think out of all of them the hammock that can be unzipped to cover just the 1 seat might be the best option. Anything that clips into the seatbelt without being hidden is a no go as he can open them. The zipline would not work either as I need to keep him in one place as best I can as he has already opened my daughters seatbelt whilst the car was moving. I'm beginning to think a straightjacket might be the obvious solution here

Re: Car safety
I've seen the doggy seat belts that go around the belt rather that clip in. ours is from the dogs trust http://www.dogstrustgifts.com/acatalog/Dogs-Trust-Car-Safety-Harness.html Think you have to get the harness to get the seat belt though but there might be some similar ones online

Re: Car safety
I know allot of dog owners who have had the same problem, they have used a bungee cord up and over the handle above the door and then down to their dogs harness or even a bungee lead with two clips.
