Would you take your dog to a fete?
I helped out with the next door village's fete yesterday, doing photos of the dog show. There were loads of dogs of all shapes and sizes, from a chi up to a mastiff... but not a staffie in sight! Why is that? Are staffie owners too aware of how their dogs will be perceived? Are staffie owners not fete goers?
Would you take yours? I have to say, it's a bit of a mission to get Chaos so great with other dogs that I can take him next year, just to fly the flag!

At the moment I wouldnt take casper, but that is because he is so hyper. I would in time if I could get him to stop acting like a mad dog. There a fair visits my area every year and I would love to be able to take him for the day to wander around like I used to do with my rottie

I wouldn't for obvious reasons - but I would potentially take one of the Staffies from the rehab centre that are socialised daily. Duke, the ambull x Staffies goes to all of the fundraisers, he's also been to a nursery to teach young children about living with dogs! He's an amazing boy.

I wouldn't at the moment, not sure if I would in the future only because with the amount of people there I'd be scared of them stepping on her toes or something.

Re: Would you take your dog to a fete?
I have taken Flo to a fete before. Generally I wouldn't just because there are so many people and I wouldn't want Flo to get stood on not because of other Dogs.
We passed a local Fete last year on our way to walking Flo somewhere different so stopped and met up with friends. We then walked through the Fete held in the high Street (which was closed) and we had lots of interest mainly because she was wearing her Deaf vest. Adults and kids alike all wanted to meet her and say Hi and on our return trip through the High Street a Pet store stall owner called us over for a quick chat and ended up giving Flo a pigs ear for later much to my OH's disgust
So yes I would take Flo but I would be mindful that she could get under peoples feet if it were that busy but I certainly wouldn't worry about other Dogs

Suki likes being in crowds more than I do so I'm sure she would be fine.

We've been to a few events with Theia. She's pretty chilled when on the lead especially if she's in both the harness and collar.

Re: Would you take your dog to a fete?
There's a Sundy market right outside brockwell park that he's been to a lot, and sometimes we brave FEAST but it's got a lot of meandering sudden stoppers with tiny dogs so it's pretty stressful for me. l was very proud of how he's getting less and less likely to leap up at the stalls, he even resisted the sausages last time.

Yeh we take Harrie to all sorts of things from farmers markets, flea markets and the Chilli festival she does get a bit nervy sometimes we then just head to a quiet area for a break and when she shakes it off start again, but most of the time she likes the places the smells and the people.
Cheers

My first thought too!-Ian- wrote:Resisted sausage
Ok, so there's a dog show at the local village hall on Sunday. I wasn't going to go because I dislike the chap who's running it (went off him when I saw him hitting his puppy round the head to teach her not to chew sticks ), but I might take Millie along. It'll be good to see how she reacts in a crowd anyway.

Re: Would you take your dog to a fete?
me and millie go to shows all the time, and she will soon be competing so she is very much used to the show environment and she gets on great with all dogs and people

This is exactly what I was going to post today about Milo ninz - we took him to a lovely big park where there's lots of families around sitting by the river and children playing etc., dogs had to be on leads so that wasn't a problem but oh my god, both my husband and myself had a job to hold him (he was on a 30 ft training line) as he just wanted to charge up to everyone and jump up them. He was whining and was exasperated at not being able to run around.
Our two little grandchildren were with us and he was leaping at them when they started to run around and play so that was scary. If I held him close and raised my voice he started to try and do that mad run around thing with ears back and I'm sure he'd nip me if he could.
What's happening to my baby ! We're firm but fair with him, give him treats when he's good etc etc.,
Any advice please?

Re: Would you take your dog to a fete?
He was way over stimulated by the sounds of things "Niffer," too much to take in/information overload. Maybe next time take him for a long walk before, and then try for a short period, but that sounds like an awful lot for any dog to cope with.

Re: Would you take your dog to a fete?
We took Bane to our village fete! He was quite well behaved, he pulls a bit so that was a bit of a mission when he kept wanting to say hello to people and see other dogs!
He has gotten into a bit of a habit of barking and making silly noises if we stop though. So at one point we sat down to watch something and I guess he gets bored so decides to make a lot of noise to get us to move again?
There were also some Indian dancers doing a show and he was not a fan! Not sure if it was because they were wearing bells and moving wierdly that he wasn't quite sure what they were? He started growling and barking at them so we had to move away Everyone thought it was funny though!

Anywhere that allows dogs I happily take Knox to. My only issue is when we have previously taken him to a Falconry Fair and they have been doing clay pigeon shooting it's made him very nervous as he doesn't like the bangs so we don't take him there any more.

I do agree with you and I look back now in hindsight and see a whole load of problems with doing that - poor lad. We took him again to a park - not quite so full on with people but again he was very overexcited and pulling. Maybe we should just stick to quiet walkies on the green where he used to

I'd personally not take casper anywhere that I know will be busy on a long lead. I save his long lead for the beach and woods and only if there isn't anyone too close. I always use his figure of 8 lead to take him out and swap to the long lead if I think it's quiet enough and he isn't already over excited.

Re: Would you take your dog to a fete?
I would definitely, Stan's been to a number already. I love seeing the attention Stanley gets to the other breeds and how the biased are shown up for pre judging him as I'm sure we've all had a taster of that here and there. I don't dislike the other dogs in the slightest but I do like to promote Staffies in their proper image rather than the one sometimes spread behind our backs. If the other dogs are friendly and sociable I let Stanley play with them, if not, I keep things calm.
