We have a 12 month old amstaff boy, we got a 9 week old amstaff girl last week and we are having troubles introducing him to her. We got our boy when he was 8 weeks old and a couple of weeks after that we had to leave Townsville to Brisbane as my son had a bad burns accident which left him in hospital for 3 months. We had to leave our boy in Townsville as we couldn't take him with us, he stayed with my partners friends where he grew up with 2 other female dogs. We had got him back in April this year, he kept getting out of our yard to try and be with the dogs next door. So we went and got a girl for him but he's just wanting to have a piece of her every time we try and introduce him to her. We have tried putting him on one side of a screen door on a lead and her on the other side, but he gets this deep grumbling growl and jumps up onto the door. Wanting a piece of her. There has been times when he is wagging his tail then he'll stop and then have a go at her again. Our next step is to take them to a park on leads and do it that way, we have got a mussel for him we're just a bit worried he'll hurt her. If you could give us any suggestions on how we can introduce them that would be appreciated.

Hi ya Steve, bringing the new girl into your boys turf is going to be seen as something of a threat. You've already answered your query really with the on lead walks on neutral territory.

So what to do in the meantime, we'll keep them apart obviously but if you can keep them away and out of sight of each other then all the better. Then with someone else to hand take them to a local park separately and gradually move them closer together. Walk with the other person so that both dogs have you humans between them. When this is working fine move one of the dogs between you but leave the other on the outside. Finally, once all is cool put the two dogs between you humans and walk.

All of the above may not be possible on the same walk and I wouldn't expect it to but what you need to show your boy is that the newbie isn't a threat. Once you've got the walking outside all going good then slowly introduce them in the home but again ensure that she isn't seen as a threat to his territory.

Take things slowly and hopefully all will be good. Another tip is to make sure that they don't play with each other's toys, that could be an excuse to rumble in the early days.

Hope there's somethings above to help Smile

An article of clothing with the pup's scent on it placed in your home will help the older dog get used to the scent. Try not to fuss over the pup too much so the older dog does not feel neglected.

Is he actually being aggressive or is it full on puppy play? It can look (and sound) like they're trying to kill each other but in fact it's just play. Before getting too worried and going for muzzles and stuff, can you take a bit of video we could look at?
