Does food affect behaviour? Empty Does food affect behaviour?

I've recently moved Casper from puppy to adult food. I've done it gradually over the past week and yesterday was his first day on the new food alone..today he is seriously hyper and not listening. He's jumping all over the furniture and the kids and has just barked at everyone in the house..so is it the new food or is it more likely to be connected to Miley arriving?
Just to add the new food is chappie dried food. He was on harringtons puppy food before.

It's probably it being chappie rather than adult food. It's far from the best ingredients.

Hello yes food does have an impact on dog behaviour i believe theres a lot of good food for a decent price on the market you're best. Checking ingredients and that will decide whats best for your dog.

Absolutely! Chappie is mostly cereals, which to us is like eating carbs for every meal - i.e energy producing foods! As far as I'm aware Harringtons was really good originally, and then they changed the ingredients to mostly maize and people started to have problems with that also, which might explain Casper running around the garden for hours on his own!

Do you have a budget when it comes to food? We could help you find something more suitable Smile

I will be honest, I was a little overwhelmed by the amount of foods on the shelves of the pet place, had my youngest in the middle of a meltdown (he has aspergers and doesn't cope with shops and lots of people etc), so just picked up what I knew I had seen on the shelves In the local supermarket so I could guarantee him the same food every week incase I couldn't get out to the pet place.

No budget really, but does need to be something I can pick up in tesco (it's 24hrs so I can shop when it's quiet with my youngest). The reason I had him on harringtons was because when I had my rottie she had a sensitive tummy and harringtons was the only one I tried that she could stomach, so I stuck with what I knew was easy on tummies when it came to getting Casper.

Try this site to decide what to feed.
The problem is supermarkets only stock food that sells and most of, if not all of those brands aren't the best.
We have a few independent pet food shops near us and they all deliver.

Generally I would always say to never buy a food that you can get in a supermarket Laughing I order online from Berriewoods wholesaler, cuts out the shops and you can order larger quantities and make sure you never run out! Totally understand about the aspergers, I'm a support worker for adults with autism/aspergers, but would be better to get the food from a decent pet shop.

The link that Lynn&Pete has posted will be really helpful for you Smile I feed nature diet, it costs me about £35 a month and Bug does really well on it, not everybody wants to feed a wet food though.

Ok this is the pet place and the foods it does. I can make the drive there when needed provided I know exactly what I'm looking for so as to minimise the time in there for the sake of my son (and my sanity?) so which of these ranges would you suggest? They only do Monday to Friday deliveries and I work all week so home delivery isn't an option.

Well ive looked at all the dog foods i would say you would be best with royal canin they have 15kg and this should last around 3 months depending how much you would feed a day mias on 6 mugs full a day broken down into 2 meals. This would save you constant trips to the pet shop Smile

Canagan and Orijen have got the best ratings out of that mix, but think they can be pricey. From experience, James Well beloved, Burns and Arden Grange are fairly good mid-range foods. It will depend on your dog though, as all will react differently. I've never fed dry food, though Bug was on chappie in kennels and was a wreck behaviourally and health wise!

I wouldn't recommend Royal Canin. I know people who weren't impressed with it. Have a word with the shop, they'll help you as much as anyone.

Hi Ninz we feed barking heads and its a good quality food, lots of choice and flavours. Although it's a bit pricier than james well beloved which is also a good quality food. I've heard mixed reviews on royal cannin

They might have taster samples so you can see what agrees with him. I mostly get him Burns and then get him a nature's diet fish pack once a week to assist his delicate skin.

Dogs dont burn carbs for primary energy, Fat is the main energy source and even then they can eat a shitload and save it for later. I know a few dogs that have intercepted mail and eaten a whole  bar of Kronch Pemmikan and slept for the rest of the afternoon. Cereals get blamed for everything but some dogs tollorate them better than others. stear away from the day glow stuff which is going to be the biggest problem with additives. dogs dont give a chuff what it looks like as long as it smells and tastes nice. Look for a good source of protein, named meats and no colourings. if your dog is cereal intollorant they will squit through the eye of a needle. also try supplimenting with oily fish, raw turkey mince, eggs, chicken for good lean muscle mass and a nice coat.

I'll second James wellbeloved for a starter food to see if he gets on with it. I usually go with that or wainwrights.
