Budget but good?
A friend of mine is struggling financially right now and i am struggling to find a decent dog food that she can afford, she can only afford £15 15kg A month. not the highest budget unfortunately but i've looked at her books and she can not scrounge any more off it. Any help would be appreciated

Re: Budget but good?
Here is a list of recommended foods. I can't help with prices because I am on the other side of the world. Raw may be a cheaper option as well and more healthy really

Re: Budget but good?
I'd agree with J, maybe pick up a few bags of prize choice free flow mince/beef chunks/chicken backs? You're not going to find anything better than wagg/tesco value for that price maybe contact the pdsa and see if they can recommend anything?

Re: Budget but good?
I don't know what you mean by £15 15Kg a month. Does that mean she has £15 a month to spend? If so try Ancestral Canine Pack Leader which works out at between £14 and £20 a month for a typical Staffie (roughly).
If you mean what dog food (and I use the word 'food' in its proper sense) costs £15 for 15Kg the answer is none.

Re: Budget but good?
she has three boisterous mini staffies....i know there is not such thing but she was had with a byb and in having three brothers, but she has had them years now,. she's just split from her hubby and isn't financially secure at all right now, could be stretched to £20, i could chip in but finding a decent food is hard, costing her more than her own food, brands really do take the mick some times the prices they charge.
her boys eat around 12kg a month between them, thats what i mean by that, should of mentioned it sooner.

Re: Budget but good?
Dont know much about dried food, but do try and get the best you can for your money as cheap food will affect behaviour and energy levels, i.e boisterousness

Re: Budget but good?
I think you will find it difficult to find a decent dry kibble for that price. It will probably be cheaper to feed raw, it takes quite a bit of research to get it right mind but if it works for you then great! Rachel is right, maybe contact the PDSA for a little help. Resorting to tinned food or a cheaper kibble contain un-natural ingredients that will no doubt cause behaviour problems.

Re: Budget but good?
Iza lives off raw tripe costs about 90p a block and she gets 2 meals out if it, mix some water based porridge, brown rice, raw egg complete with crushed up shell into it or dog biscuits to get other nutrients.
The tripe and porridge is Iza's fave but disgusting to prepare

Re: Budget but good?
I can't see which 'Wagg' food you're referring to but I'd stay away from all Wagg food.
Looking on their website, every type of food they have, the two main/first ingredients are 'cereal' and 'meat derivatives'.. that alone tells me to steer clear. Not good nutritionally.

Re: Budget but good?
Wagg of any description is no good at all.Even local pet stores do their own grain free which is better than that

Re: Budget but good?
My main concern with Wagg is that the first ingredient is maize and it contains no real meat, only 5% meat meal. It's basically floor sweepings..
Is this for your guys or your friend's dogs? Just noticed you said your dogs won't eat it, but perhaps your friend's will?

Re: Budget but good?
is there a thread saying what is actually wrong with cereal, wheat and maize? I understand the high in carb with the cereal and wheat but maize is just corn, looking at the Harringtons its looks alright or am i wrong, should i suggest this food for her?

Re: Budget but good?
That's why I don't feed it - it's just a filler and has minimal nutritional value so it seems a little pointless feeding it.

Re: Budget but good?
As mentioned, maize is a filler with little nutritional value. As well as being broadly useless as a dog food it can cause digestive problems months or years down the line, due to the digestive system constantly being irritated by undigested cereal products.

That's the great thing about these forums 'Sharing Experiences/Knowledge' I agree any food must have 'Adequate' nutritional value (that's a must).
Re: Budget but good?
Hope someone can recommend a good cheaper food for Amelie's friend, possibly one within budget which also provides adequate nutrition for their dogs ...?
Re: Budget but good?
Thanks everyone, she has put them on harringtons, the only food they eat all at once and don't pick at it throughout the day, they love it, and her oldest overweight guy is losing a little weight to thanks to a decent diet, big thanks.
