help/aadvice please
Hi!
So we got our new puppy today who is absolutely gorgeous!
We already have a 3 year old Staff.
Both dogs males.
My 3 year old (Titan) isn't sure of him, they have only met through crates/sstair gate... but he has growled at him a bit, and got a little aggressive when puppy (no name) scratched his nose.
So, what's best way to go about this..?

Re: help/aadvice please
Rather than have a face to face confrontation, I'd have them both on leads and walk them alongside each other as much as you can given the pup's age. When you're relaxing in the living room, again have them on leads so that they can be in each other's company but without them being able to get too close. You should find they all relax with a little time.

Thanks.
Sorry about my spelling my phones going crazy.
The vet told my partner the best way would be with Titan on a muzzle, thoughts on that?

Little and often interactions too. They should settle fairly quickly if introduced as Liz has said. You will see some telling off from your older one which is to be expected and the puppy will learn from it. You could muzzle but that might raise the stress level ans be counter productive. Try what has been suggested by Liz but if there's a real show of aggression then that might have to be the short term solution. Hopefully they'll be the best of buddies in no time

Re: help/aadvice please
If titan isnt aggressive toward the pup i wouldn't bother muzzling i would just walk them as much as possibke together as already said .

What about when Titan does growl? How should we be reacting to that?

Re: help/aadvice please
A low growl alone may not mean aggression, you'll need to read the rest of the body language. At this stage don't make a fuss of the growl just keep them at a safe distance and controlled. It'll take a little time for things to adjust and become comfortable.

Re: help/aadvice please
Older dogs will also look to show younger dogs the does and don'ts of life too so there will be a bit of what seems like grumpiness here and there, they don't see a cute puppy they see a potential pain in the you know what if they don't get guidance starting yesterday. You need to get them to bond and letting the older one smell his back end will let him know a lot about him, also association with the pup and pleasurable things like interesting walks as a pack will help your older dog feel the newbie is a member of his pack, not just a fly to swat. Once they start to bond your older dog will look to be his new role model. We had this happen with our GSD and toy poodle, any dog looking for funny business soon understood that to get to him you first had to get by his new little brother the GSD. Even as a youngster they soon understand family and to look after their own, do it right and yours will do likewise and make you even prouder than you are of them now.
