Dog aggressive Staffy
Hi everyone and thanks for reading this post. I'm new to Staffies, the one I have is a rescue dog around 2yrs old great with people, great with kids and you can take food off him. He's also neutered. He's only been living with us a couple of weeks and really settled in. At first the very sight of a dog and he'd go nuts barking, teeth showing lunging on his lead etc and as soon as the other dog passed he'd want to run in the opposite direction. Now he'll tolerate dogs around 3-4mtrs from him, he no longer barks but without warning he will lunge and just goes into a frenzied state. Can anyone recommend a dog trainer around the Stoke on Trent area to work with my dog to help him become a calmer happier dog please??

Re: Dog aggressive Staffy
welcome from me and mia id recommend introducing the dog to calmer older dogs small dogs etc my mia was bred very young so doesn't like bigger dogs or dogs same size as her. our relationship works ive learned mias triggers. I took mia to a local dog class there was all different breeds there through time ive learned she only likes small dogs and cats . shes not a bad dog just had a bad owner and experiences unfortunately. If i were you id type dog socialisation classes in your area best of luck and well done on the rescue

Hi and welcome from Ozzy and me, the best place to look for a behaviourist is really by recommendatuon form your vet. Oz is DA and unfortunately its something we just have to deal with. He is kept on the elad at all times, we have a heavy duty extender lead but we do ahve to have eyes in the back of our head in case an off lead dog comes charging towards us, we warn other owners just to eb careful and to be honest most of them understand and either put their dog on a lead or give us space. its not easy but you will get some good advice from a qualified behaviourst as we did. its something you get used to and get to know how to handle in time

Hi from us too!
I think you're right to try and find a trainer. You sometimes get dogs who behave like this who aren't dog aggressive, just excited and frustrated they can't play. There are dogs who come out of rescue with so much pent up stress after having lived with incessant barking that they're no longer sure what to do, or who simply haven't learned how to react round other dogs. In other words, this might be something that's not impossible to fix in a reasonable amount of time, if you get the right help.
Getting a recommendation from a vet might be good, but I've also know vets recommend some shockers so you do need to have your wits about you still.
There are 2 organisations whose members should, in theory, be good.

The APDT website also has good information on choosing a trainer. Again, though, keep a reality check in mind. If someone is saying or, worse, doing stuff that doesn't seem right, don't go with them just because they're a member or something and use some letters on their business cards. Anyone who uses physical punishment or shouting, or who goes on about dominance should be avoided at all costs.
There are some really, really good trainers out there. I hope you find one and end up having loads of fun as well as some sensible, workable solutions to your problem.
