Help! Car insurance..
SO! I bought my first car
However, insurance is a nightmare and I have no idea what i'm doing On comparison websites the companies under the admiral umbrella (elephant, diamond, bell) are coming up best (half of the price of other quotes!) but reviews are poor - however, it would also seem that reviews for nearly all of the affordable ones are poor!
Those of you that drive - who are you insured with and what have your experiences been? Do you chose simply on price? I'm so stuck! Need to make a decision today of who to go with

Ah you are right lovely, all of them have crap reviews so apparently it won't make a difference if I pay £500 or £2000! The car was only £500 and is nearly 20 years old so I don't want to be paying loads in case it falls apart

Re: Help! Car insurance..
Congrats on the newcar!! What ya get? We pretty much go for the cheapest one that we have heard of!
I have been insured with Diamond for maybe 4 years or so and Elephant before that and have had no real problems! Had a few bumps too and they paid out. The only hiccup I had was when I got a new car mid policy after an accident and after agreeing a price for the remaining term, then tried to charge me £250+ extra admin fees! All it took was a phone call for it to be corrected though
The OH has been with Admiral too for the last god knows how many years with no problems and only just changed as got a cheaper quote else where.
Good Luck

Re: Help! Car insurance..
Great news your on the road Rachel... Do I need to give fair warning if I'm heading your way though just so as you can keep off the road those days
To be honest, car insurance is very much down to the individual circumstances what with age etc. if it's a cheap motor then go for cheap insurance and do shop around.
I haven't had my own insurance for over 25 years as the OH gets it cheaper being a woman (sexist or what) and I'm a named driver. We are currently with Sainsbury's as they offer all that we want with the extras etc.

Re: Help! Car insurance..
I'm currently with Aviva which have been good and their website allows reviews of any kind and have been pretty good in getting stuff sorted. However they are that bit more expensive. While the cheapest option is usually the one people go for, make sure you know what it includes such as windscreen replacement, breakdown etc as some may look good but are basic at best.
One important piece of advice I would give is to make sure you get no claims protection so if in the event of making a claim it won't affect your no claims amount (in years driving) which will bring your insurance down each year once you start building them up. Also go for the highest excess you can afford and this will bring your price down too. Shop around until you're happy as the all in one websites don't always have the best offers as some companies don't use them.
