Football stealer extraordinaire
Morning All, I have a nearly nine month old mostly-staff (one grandparent is American bulldog/Rotty cross) who's life's ambition is to steal all footballs and toys off of other dogs whilst completely disregarding any toys of his own. He also interrupts football games in order to demonstrate how he thinks it should be done.I'm just waiting for the day he punctures a football and I have to deal with a tearful child/irate parents. I've taken to putting him back on the lead when I spot a football game anywhere within the park because he get so excited.
Is this a staffy thing that I can train him out of, or am I doomed to forever carry reimbursement money for broken footballs?

Hi and welcome to the Forum from Flo & me
I have to admit that my Flo loves to get right in the middle of a kick around so I'm thinking it's pretty normal for Staffs to think they are the next Beckham
I'm sure you can get them to stay to the sidelines with some training and handfulls of tasty treats though.

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
I guess someone else's ball is always going to be more interesting than your own. try to distract with another toy if possible or yes just pop back on the lead for a while until you are out of range.

Re: Football stealer extraordinaire
Hi from Leia and me.
I cant really comment on this subject, the other staffies I have owned stayed on the lead and watched my eldest son play football for a couple of years on the sidelines so I guess they just got used to it that way.
Leia on the other hand hasn't been off the lead yet, but has her own football she plays with at home, Im not sure if that was a good idea or not.

Hi and welcome to the forum from me and the zoo xx
My staff also loves footballs and I've had many a crying child on the receiving end of a punctured ball Their fault though as I have my dog under control and they kick the ball towards us as they think it's funny to watch me try to keep Knox calm so now I don't stop him from getting them

Re: Football stealer extraordinaire
Thank you for all the welcomes! Our park has lots of hills so it's difficult to spot footie players until you're almost on top of them - makes avoidance pretty tricky. He snagged a ball and legged it to the other side of the park once. I think the kids found it more funny than anything 'cos Gizmo kept ducking out of range anytime I tried to grab him.
He found a slipper in someone's recycling this morning and proudly carried it to the park with him, shaking his head all the while. Soon as he got to the park it was dropped in favour of a bottle top.
