My staffs Max has become very hard walk when taking him for walks.
My staffs max has become a nightmare when I am walking him. He always pulls so I am use to that, however he growls at other dogs when he is on the lead and when I let him off he looks around the common to find his next victim,,,,,,, he goes for any other dogs collars but it looks like he is biting other dogs necks. I am at my wits end and he always use to come back when I called him now he does not take a blind bit of notice. Max is 3. I use a harness, half check, chain lead, extendable lead, halti...... I feel I have lose my confidence in him and because of the breed I get other dog owners screaming at me, can anyone give me some ideas???

Try starting from scratch and muzzling him, then people cant have ago as you have him muzzled, and start training from basics again, I hope your okay

Personaly i wouldnt use a muzzel but would work on the play ethos. he sounds like he is just goading other dogs to play and dogs like ours make a god awfull play noise which other owners may feel sound like agression when its far from that. any walking groups near you? btw neck biting is a classic puppy "play with me play with me" akin to a kid pulling on another childs coat arms. to me it just sounds like he is getting excited around other dogs but showng his chest at the same time. more play time with other dogs may be your answer

Re: My staffs Max has become very hard walk when taking him for walks.
Firstly if you have lost the recall then please do not let him off lead! Of course it's great to let him have a good run off but if he is approaching new/strange dogs not only would I be livid as the other owner but you don't know how that dog is going to react and you having your dog out of control will be at fault. know that a person only has to be in fear of being bitten by law to get police involved many people are fearful of bull breeds and bigger dogs in general and in particular staffy play can be very rough and noisy please do whatever you can to not put yourself or Max in a situation where someone could put in a complaint against youÂ
The behaviour can easily be managed with a bit of work when he starts to pull stop and turn around wait for him to come back to heel then re continue your walk believe me this can look daft and may be a bit tedious but they do soon learn that they get to where they want to go quicker by not pulling. Again with the growling at other dogs when on lead a pocket full of treats and the 'watch me' command to keep his focus away from passing dogs works wonders and starts to reinforce that 'you' are the best thing in the park which will help in rebuilding the recall. For this long training lines/horse leaders are dead cheap and strong they give the dog a bit of freedom and will help with your confidence that he isn't going to shoot off out of reach you can also get a good grip unlike the cord/tape on an extendable lead that could rip into your handsÂ
Biggest thing is you being confident again, once you give off signals that you are worried about a situation Max will think he has something to worry about too and chances are he will associate your fear with being due to the other dogs presence which for him could tip that balance between instigating play and aggression.

Totally agree with the above post. If you aren't confident and in control your Staff will pick up on it. He may well be having fun but other owners won't see it as that. Back to basics I'm afraid, you really need to get that recall working good, not only does that give you confidence but it also shows other owners that max is under control.

Re: My staffs Max has become very hard walk when taking him for walks.
I have been attending a weekly dog training class since we had Scoob back in October last year. It has been the best thing for him and for us as responsible dog owners.
I definitely look into it.
As others have already said, confidence from the owner is very important. For example, if I try to get Scoob to "wait" on the spot while I do something, he will only listen if I say it loud, clear and with confidence - not only in my voice, but with my body language too.
They need to know who is the boss.
