Post by -Ian- Sun Feb 08 2015, 11:12

Hi & Welcome from Flo and me Big Grin

Do you know why your newly rescued staff is deaf ? It doesn't really matter but it might make things easier if you know exactly how deaf !

My Flo has no ear canals and is pretty much as deaf as you get but we have discovered that she can hear some things hence my question above. Training is exactly the same as a hearing dog really, so I need to ask another question, how old is your new fur kid ? And has he/she had any training previously ?

Like you do with a hearing dog, use hand signals. The difference being that you make the hand signals bolder and easier to see For sit, stay, wait etc. now, those are the easy ones ! Recall is the difficult one and something you might find a challenge but not impossible as I can demonstrate with my Flo.

If you can answer some of the questions I've posed you, I can suggest more things. Well done on the rescue, especially one of our gorgeous deaf ones Big Grin

Young and very trainable. Did you get him from a rescue centre ? If so, which one and did they give you any advice ?. My Flo came from Battersea and all we got was a photo copied piece of paper with some basic signs on it Rolling Eyes

Ah ok. Dogs trust are great but like other rescue centres they have little experience of training deaf dogs I guess.

So, same as any training start with the basic sit. Hold a treat in your hand towards his face then raise it straight up towards your chin. If his backside doesn't go down, gently push his rump down so he gets the idea. Also say the word sit, doesn't make sense to but it does actually help you. When he is sat, reward with the treat and plenty of praise. Then you need to repeat, repeat, repeat.

Wait is the same as sit only with a bold hand pointing upwards and extended up like a halt sign, again, say the words wait. This is going to take longer as any dog owner will tell you, deaf or not deaf.

Recall... Now this is difficult to advise and you might have to experiment to find what works best.

The hard part here is getting his attention in the first place when hurtling across some huge field. I've tried a buzzer attached to the collar, it doesn't hurt it simply vibrates and Flo knows to turn and look at us as she will get a treat. Some advise a flash light, but if he isn't looking then that isn't going to work.

All of this part of the training needs to be done on a long lead 20-50 meters so that you still have control. You can use it in tandem with the buzzing collar thing so that you gentle pull on the lead at the same time as buzzing. never use a shock collar they are barbaric and actually send the wrong message to your dog.

With my Flo, we discovered that she can hear some things and this is why I asked earlier about how deaf your boy is. I can below at Flo and she will return. In fact she has better recall than many of the dogs we see on walks. She is off lead on our walks in the park and we have built up a certain trust between us i.e I won't run off and leave her and she won't run off and leave me.

I should point out though, this isn't quick. It took me nearly two years but is soooo worth it especially when I get to show off her recall and people are amazed that a deaf dog can be this good Smile

Hi from me and Cooper.

It's great that you rescued one who is deaf. A lot of people would just overlook the dog because of that and it would end up spending a great deal of time in the rescue centre so well done you.
